Flood Reserve - the natural drop
The rich red soils of the delightful Flood Reserve Vineyard have been planted over the past six years with grapes sourced from established Port Macquarie and Griffith vineyards.
Established in 1997, the Flood Reserve Vineyard is the only commercial vineyard on the far north coast of New South Wales. With 2.5 hectares under vines, their wines are produced using very simple, traditional methods.
Vintner Brian Mull first harvested in 1998 and made some early wines, developing both the crop and winemaking process swiftly to gain his vintners licence in March 2001.
The vineyard itself is set atop the rich red soil of the original flood reserve farmland near Red Hill at Tatham, south of Lismore.
Flood Reserve wines are made using traditional techniques - no artificial tannins or taste additives are used in the winemaking process and very little preservatives are added.
The finished wine is not filtered and many operations are done manually. The result is a selection of wines that incorporate the flavours of the fruit while maintaining the delicacy of naturally made wines.
Their white wines are produced from Verdelho and Chardonnay grapes and the reds from Chambourcin and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year's growing season can vary greatly and therefore the varieties of wine made by Flood Reserve can also change from year to year.
The vineyard's wines are now available at the Rous Hotel, the Gollan Hotel and Lismore Cellars in Wyrallah Road.
The Flood Reserve Vineyard is located on Smith's Road, a two-kilometre drive out of Tatham, along the Coraki Road. Phone 6663 1205.
