Help your Garden Grow
Proprietor of Conway Street Garden Centre, Ian Rowe, in his beautiful nursery on Conway St.
With water shortages a serious issue at present, one way to keep plants healthy and make the most out of your water is to mulch everything in the garden.
Proprietor of Conway Street Garden Centre, Ian Rowe, is an experienced horticulturist with more than 15 years experience and he says there are millions of reasons to use mulch.
Mulch helps conserve soil moisture, and in the current climate its important to make the most of your water, Ian said. It increases the organic content of soil, which also helps increase soil moisture and it cuts down on weeds, increases soil fertility and increases biological activity in soil, which results in healthier soil and plants.
Ian sells bales of cane mulch for just under $15 and that will cover nine square metres, while tea tree mulch is available in 60 or 100 litre bales for $8.50 or $13.25.
Another great water saving idea is water crystals small gel-like balls that swell in water before being placed near the plant roots. The crystals then slow release this water into the root system, working continually to keep the plant healthier. A jar containing just 225 grams of crystals makes 35 litres of gel, which also represents excellent value.
Conway Street Garden Centre also stocks potting mixes, compost and other soil improvers to help moisture retention and many water-wise plants, which cope well in dry conditions.
Ian has a great range of indoor and outdoor plants in the nursery at very competitive prices, which make great Christmas presents for friends or relatives. Ian ensures sun-loving plants are grown from seed in the full sun, thus eliminating any transplant shock often associated with plants grown in air-conditioned environments, and he has garden accessories like pest and disease treatments to help keep plants looking fabulous.
There is also a range of lovely giftware at the centre, as well as gorgeous water features, ceramic pots and much more for anyone who loves gardens or a bit of greenery indoors. Conway Street Garden Centre is a little haven right in the CBD, and Ian welcome people to go in for a leisurely browse anytime. As Minnie Aumonier once said, when the world wearies
there is always the garden.
Conway Street Garden Centre is at 74 Conway Street (just down from Steves Bakery), and it is open seven days every week. For more information phone Ian on 6622 8177.
