40 Years of Hospitality

Moving into the catering industry was a natural progression for Lismore local Steven Wotherspoon. His parents started a business in 1962, and often Steven would help out in the store after school. After completing school Steven joined Cater-Equip on a full-time basis.

Four decades later Steven is still carrying on the family tradition, and he still enjoys operating the business and seeing all his regular customers. In fact Steven says that’s the secret to his success – the customer, and making sure they always come first.

“The level of service to the customer is always the top priority here – we often get comments from people saying how much they appreciate us going that extra mile,” Steven said. “If we say we’ll deliver something at 3pm Monday, it’ll be delivered at 3pm on Monday – not two days later and without a phone call. We make sure our customers are fully informed and when we say we’ll do something, we follow through. And the service is the same for everybody. Whether it’s a $2 plate or a $1,000 sale it still means the same to us.”

Steven currently operates the business with sales manager, Stephen Bird, and while the names may get confusing Steven says Stephen is an absolute asset, with more than 12 years sales experience under his belt.

“He’s fitted in so easily,” Steven said. “With his experience in sales and my 25 odd years in the industry, we make a good team.”

Cater-Equip specialises in small wares and shelving, providing a diverse range of products to the hospitality trade, as well as to warehouses and manufacturers, and agricultural and health industries.

Products include crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchenware for hospitality businesses, with shelving, storage systems and plastic bins for other industries.

Whether starting a business from scratch or adding to an existing structure, Steven can provide customers with the best advice and equipment to match.

Cater-Equip is at 45 Wyrallah Road, East Lismore. The business is open Monday to Friday, from 8.30am-5pm, and people are welcome to drop in anytime.
