FONSies ramp up action as skaterpark lies abandoned
Long-time local skater from Nimbin, Franco Girardi has resorted to skating the radar dishes from the recently dismantled telecommunications tower on Mt Nardi while the Nimbin skate park remains abandoned.
The Nimbin community has given a passionate response in favour of completing the skatepark with the recently formed FONS, (Friends of Nimbin Skatepark) now spearheading the campaign.
FONS spokesperson Duncan Wilson said investigation and costing of different methods for sound-proofing the park were currently underway, so it could be completed to “the benefit and satisfaction” of the whole Nimbin community.
Meanwhile the search to find funding is on.
The FONS meet every Friday at 5pm at the Nimbin Skatepark, (and at the Nimbin Oasis in wet weather), to develop fundraising strategies and are calling on local, state and federal government to pledge support and help with funding. He said they were also very interested to hear from any tradespersons, earthmovers, builders or engineers who were able to offer support or advice. Working bees had started at the park to get on top of the rust and prepare the site for the final stages of construction every Friday from 9am and all are welcome.
Duncan said they had a growing membership at $100 for Gold, $50 for Silver and $10 for Bronze (schoolkids only).
“We need just one Kryptonite Member at $100,000!,” he joked. “Completion of the Nimbin skatepark will provide an important means of diversion away from the drug trade of town for the Nimbin youth, while building confidence and skills for their empowerment and social development.”
So if you’re feeling philanthropic, an invitation is being extended to all businesses, organisations and individuals to provide help or sponsor the project in return for promotion, advertising opportunities or just plain old-fashioned satisfaction in seeing a good deed done.
