Don’t miss looks@books
Recent SCU arts graduate Julie Barratt chooses to present a lot of her work in artists’ books. Last month she opened her own gallery, Barratt Galleries in the old Tintenbar Council Chambers in Alstonville, and will be hosting a morning symposium this Saturday, August 11, with Sydney printmaker and artist book collector Monica Oppen. The session is not to be missed by anyone interested in the genre of the artist book. The two-hour morning session will include morning tea and tickets cost $20. For more info call Julie on 6628 0297.
Artists books are suddenly everywhere it seems. In fact last month The Australian Art Review noted that they had suddenly moved to centre stage, following trends in Europe and America, where the market is thriving with art investors.
A visual feast of books made by artists will be on display at the Southern Cross University library throughout August.
The exhibition, called looks@books#2, is the second part of the three-part looks@books series, which celebrates the creative vision of artists who choose to develop and present their work in a book format – whether the pages are ceramic plates, recycled paper, canvas, plastic or any other medium.
The month-long exhibition features the work of visual arts students from the University of Southern Queensland, which earlier this year hosted an exhibition of artists’ books by Southern Cross University’s visual arts students – looks@books#1. The exhibition runs during library hours until August 31.
Meanwhile, tonight (Thursday, August 9) at 5.30pm sees the judging of Southern Cross University’s annual Acquisitive Artists’ Books Award at the SCU nextart Gallery, Goodman Plaza, Lismore campus.
The award is being judged by nationally recognised artist and printmaker Richard Tipping. Richard is a media lecturer and has published three books of poems.
Southern Cross University is recognised as a leader in the field of producing art graduates with passion and expertise in creating artists’ books. Two recent graduates, Joanna Kambourian and Julie Barratt, learnt last week that they have just been sponsored by the Noosa Regional Gallery to attend an international artists’ books conference being held in September this year.
