Trains, schools & water restrictions

The romance of steam rail travel was at its magnetic best in Casino during the October long weekend with the visit of locomotive 3801 and the re-enactment of the opening of the Casino to Murwillumbah rail link a century ago.

Hundreds from near and far enjoyed the steam train excursions on the main Sydney to Brisbane line. Countless onlookers flocked to roadside vantage points to take in the spectacle, and the Pacific Coast mini-rail catered for many others.

It is ironic that during this time of celebrating 100 years of rail service to Casino, that the State Government has plans to further reduce rural regional rail services.

Such a reduction would have severe implications not only for Casino but the North Coast region as well. Rail services are vital to us here in country NSW.

The loss of passenger rail services will place great pressure on an already overloaded road infrastructure and have impact on health, education, economic development and tourism.

Our community should view the proposed slashing of rail services with grave concern and I urge you to be active in conveying this message to your local member and the Minister for Transport.

Ellangowan Public School has a special motto, "Small But Strong". Its motto is not confined to the school alone - it reflects the spirit of the entire Ellangowan community. The school's centenary celebration day was a huge success. A new bell was rung, a rosebush was transplanted and a centenary garden dedicated.

The warmth of the reunion and the support it received would have been gratifying for the hard working committee led by Max Jordan and School Principal Mike Reynolds.

That evening, the Ellangowan Hall celebrated its 80 years with a traditional country hall dance. As usual there were as many people inside the hall as there were outside (yes, the latter congregated around the open car boot).

Next week is National Carer's Week. The week recognises the contribution made by ordinary Australians to ensuring quality in the lives of people with special needs. Carers are a particularly special, unselfish group who have taken on an often demanding role. We extend to them a "well-done" next week.

A reminder that level 2 water restrictions apply in Casino. Please read the rules and seek advice from Council on 6660 0300 if you have a query. Be mindful that commercial operations have to continue and are allowed certain tolerances.
