Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde

Directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and BlondeReese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods with Bruce McGill as Congressman Stanford Marks with their dogs, Bruiser and Leslie.

I'm a big fan of the charming Reese Witherspoon and as a blonde who loves cute dogs and the colour pink it's no biggie to discover I also loved the movie Legally Blonde (although I draw the line at actually dressing up my tiny poodle much, I'm sure, to Sweet Pea's relief).

Yep, first time around it was a lot of fun. After all, who could resist perky blonde lawyer Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) and her cuter than cute fashion plate of a Chihuahua, Bruiser. Not me, that's for sure, or the millions of others around the world who dosed up big on Elle's optimistic outlook and dazzling smile. So in true Hollywood tradition it was inevitable that Legally Blonde 2 would eventually appear on our big screens.

Actually make that Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde aka Miss Woods goes to Washington.

In this latest instalment Elle is busily planning her wedding to fiancé Emmett (Luke Wilson) and looking forward to receiving a promotion at the law office where she works.

But when she discovers Bruiser's mum is being used to test cosmetics, Elle is horrified and vows to take the cosmetic firm to court. Unfortunately her boss has other ideas and Elle finds herself unemployed.

Never one to just give up Elle is undeterred, resolving to take her cause, stopping cosmetic testing on animals, all the way to the top, to Washington DC.

It's your not so typical fish out of water scenario. Like a dazzling pink perfumed bombshell Elle arrives in Washington expecting to win over the political heavyweights in no time, especially as she has the support of Representative, and fellow animal lover, Victoria Rudd (Sally Field). Or does she?

This is fluff at its fluffiest, despite the very worthy animal rights agenda. But hey, we were never expecting Oscar winning material here, although personally I think Sophie Carbonell's costume designs are a definite contender for an Academy Award (is there a category for canine couture?)

While Legally Blonde 2 still delivers big with the warm and fuzzies and will keep you chuckling throughout, and its star practically radiates off the screen, the whole thing is just too over the top and silly, even for me. And I have to admit all the political stuff had me glazing over (did I mention I was blonde?)

It's hard for any sequel to live up to its predecessor but if you loved the original Legally Blonde you'll still have a fun time revisiting all the gang. Good one, Elle!
