Their Own Little Patch

A selection of Fay’s patchwork quilts and Shirley’s paintings.

A new exhibition featuring still life paintings by Shirley Miller and patchwork by Fay Murray, Patches and Paint, opens this weekend at the Nimbin Regional Gallery.

Fay, a former silversmith and landscape gardener, began experimenting with patchwork after attending a colour and design course at TAFE many years ago.She soon began creating her own pattern designs and dying her own fabrics to create a unique collection of patchwork quilts.

She moved to Nimbin seven years ago, and is now a member of the Goonellabah Quilters Group.

Shirley's paintings draw on her experience as a traditional landscape painter and are in uenced by her many trips to Alice Springs, Kakadu and other outback areas.Her latest collection of paintings came about during a stay near Alice Springs, where she found the winds too strong, and was forced to collect objects and paint them in her tent.

This inspired Shirley to create to a new series of works featuring found objects, from the leaves she collected in the outback to Japanese objects feathers and crockery.

Patches and Paint opens this Saturday, May 31, at 11.30am.All are welcome.

The exhibition runs until June 15.
