The Slammer virus, which attacked over the weekend, is the most damaging since the Love Bug. It doesn't target E-mail clients, but the database on Microsoft SQL servers. It crippled many organisations, including banks, bringing down their ATM systems. The virus is a worm that generates denial of service attack, sending a flood of data down a network, effectively jamming the network so information can reach the service. A virus patch is available.
Sony and Toshiba sealed a deal with RAMBUS to license the development of a new chip designed by IBM. Dubbed the Cell it will be capable of 1 trillion Hertz - 100 times faster than the current Pentium IV. The chip uses a new silicon layering process with multiple processors in the one chip. Get ready for Playstation 3.
Spanish police have uncovered a growing ATM fraud problem in which thieves put small digital camera above the keypad and replace it with a fake version. The thieves have also managed to replace the magnetic swiper, which allows them duplicate the magnetic strip on the card.
