Insomnia
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Al
Pacino and Robin Williams share a close moment.
I don't know about you, but if I have to watch one more movie starring
Robin Williams playing a lovable, goofy character I'm going to throw up.
Now a despicable murderer, that's a different story. (And don't worry,
you'll find out early on in Insomnia who the killer is, so I haven't
spoilt it by revealing that it's Robin Williams).
From the director of the extremely successful edgy thriller Memento comes this
remake of a Norwegian film. Yep, Hollywood's done it again, but thankfully
the resulting flick is a good film in its own right - a rarity amongst remakes.
Certainly Insomnia is helped along by some fine performances from its top-notch
cast. Al Pacino plays LA detective Will Dormer, who along with his partner Hap
Eckhart (Martin Donovan), has been sent to the Alaskan town of Nightmute to help
investigate the murder of a 17-year-old local girl.
Just why the two have been shipped off to Alaska is soon made obvious, (they're
in deep doo-doo back home), but things quickly go from bad to worse for the veteran
cop when his plan to trap the killer goes horribly wrong.
With a conscientious young cop (Hilary Swank) breathing down his neck, a lack
of sleep clouding his senses and a tormenting murderer on the loose is it any
wonder Dormer (Pacino) looks more and more haggard.
This satisfying thriller has a lot going for it. The well-rounded plot is full
of exciting scenes and the performances are all good. If you're an Al Pacino
fan you won't be disappointed, but fans of Robin Williams may be in for a
bit of a shock (in my view, a good one). It's goodbye Patch Adams, hello
and watch out Hannibal Lecter!
If you enjoy an edge-of-your-seat thriller then I would recommend this.
