Brightwell a Master
What an exciting and memorable experience it was for Eryn Brightwell of Casino RSM Bowling Club last week!
Eryn entered the State Master Singles Championship which was held in Sydney and attracted many of the top bowlers in the State. The event was a knock-out format and Eryn won her games on Monday and Tuesday mornings and afternoons, putting her into the quarter finals on Wednesday morning which she also won. The semi final that afternoon was her toughest game and after 47 ends with dark descending and lights on, she managed a win 31-30.
Thursday morning saw her pitted against Willow Fong, one of Australia's top bowlers and a former Commonwealth Games representative. The game see-sawed early on, then Eryn won a three, a four and from then on, she stayed focused and won 31-24. Congratulations, Eryn, on an outstanding performance.
I understand Eryn was complimented by the officials for her demeanour on the green and I can understand why. Anytime I have seen Eryn play, she has been most gracious in both victory and defeat and always acknowledges good bowls from her own team and the opposition.
Now for those of us who can't aspire to heights like that, here are some local events which you can enter and enjoy.
Alstonville Men's BC 2002 Annual Carnival is on July 20 and 21.
On the Saturday, Men's Pairs commences at 9am with three rounds being played. Sunday sees Mixed Fours as the format, with two rounds being played after a 9.30am start. $1250 will be distributed over the two days and raffles of bowls bags and meat trays will be run.
For bowlers who win nothing, there will be a free Keno ticket and lots of sympathy. Entry fee for the pairs is $24 a team and the fours is $40 per team which includes lunch and nibbles. Phone the bowls office on 6628 7194 or coordinator Bob Squires on 6628 3435 to register.
The Lismore Workers Group has an outing to Kyogle this month. The bus will depart Lismore at 8am, with bowls at 9am and lunch to follow. Give Bowls Secretary Bob Johnson a call on 6622 5792 to register or find out more details.
Lismore City BC will conduct its 95th Birthday Carnival from July 26-29. Mixed Fours will be held on Friday, noon start, two rounds of 15 and is sponsored by Doug Hogan Station Hotel, South Lismore.
Caroona Retirement Village is the sponsor on Saturday for Men's Triples which commences at 1pm and comprises two rounds.
Sunday is the big day, sponsored by the Lismore and District Workers Club, when the official birthday celebration will take place. Format is Men's fours, 9.30am start, two rounds followed by the birthday luncheon.
On Monday, for those who are still capable of standing, there will be Men's Pairs, with a 12.30pm start and two games being played. Sponsors are AON Insurance.
The cost for each day except Sunday is $8 per head - Sunday is $16 per head. Prizes will be awarded to winners, runners-up and best round daily. Get your entries in and help the oldest club in the District celebrate its special day. Phone the club on 6621 5991 or fax on 6622 8320.
Until next week,
good bowling.

The most prestigious Northern Rivers golf event of the year, with all the Northern Rivers "Guns" put on show, will be held at Mullumbimby on July 27-28. The event is a 36 hole stroke event. Club champions to play off for Champion of champions. I will be so bold as to pick young Northern Rivers and Byron Bay talent Marco Zirov, to win the Junior section, 16 years of age and playing off 1 handicap. Nominate now and have a great weekend at Mullum!
Some more exciting news for our Northern Rivers area: the NSW Schoolgirls and Schoolboys combined high schools finals were recently played at Narrandera, with cold conditions prevailing. The girls team finished in a very close second place with Lismore lady club champ and Northern Rivers talent Emily Gray chosen to represent NSW. In the boys team, which finished fifth, another young talent, Marco Zirov, has been recognised for his ability and has been chosen as a reserve for the NSW Schoolboys team, which is also a top effort.

Wayne McInnes: Saturday's winner of Lismore B Grade.
|
|
This Saturday the men and ladies will play a single stableford, with Brownie's boys to play the RSL Peter Clout Shield this Sunday.
Last Wednesday a good field of 200 golfers teed off in a single stableford event, with Geoffrey Morgan taking out the overall honours with 42. The A Grade winner, Gordon Stovold won on a countback, from Don Beck. Ron Sewell took out the B Grade section also on a countback from George Robinson, with David Scourse taking out C Grade from Colin Huett.
Last Friday another single stableford event was played, with Barry Elwin taking the honours from Joey Morris, and Max Crummy.
Woodburn-Evans Head
This Saturday a 4BBB stableford event will be played, with a single stableford Saturday week.
Last Wednesday the ladies played a single stroke event with popular secretary Karen Allen winning A Grade with Beryl Davidson taking out B Grade, while last Thursday the veterans played a 4BBB stableford. The winners on the day were, Two Toms, Tom Durbidge and Tom Payne.
Alstonville
Last Sunday, members played the first round of their club champos at Woodburn, and I am quite surprised to not see Transit Centre manager, Greg Cross mentioned in despatches. Next week maybe mate! The winner on the day was consistent Ross Woolfe, with 66, winning by 2 from Tony Threlfa. Then came Trevor Robb, Robert Hicks and Tony Melbourne and I think Rob will take out the champos. Mark Fisher has a little ground to make up as he took out the NAGA award with a net 85. Know how you feel mate!
Next game is at Byron Bay on Sunday, July 21, with tee off at 7am and thanks Crossy for sending results each week!
Casino
This Saturday Casino golfers will travel to Lismore to contest the first of two rounds for the coveted Michael Cup, which Lismore looks like retaining once again, with medley events being trialled on Tuesdays, along the same lines as Thursday's comp. Top idea fellas!
Coraki
This Saturday the second round of the club champos will be played in three grades, with my pick to again take out the club title, Rodney Davidson, in amongst the pack lying fourth - I think he will make a move next week. The "Gun" Jimmy Ormond showed that he is not ready to lie down when he recorded a fine par round, of 70, using all his guile and cunning. Top effort Jim, but the young fellas are hard to peg back. Jim beat Club Preso Pat Neven by 5, (both know how to win a championship). Popular clubman Dick (Chuggalug) Jarrett took out A Reserve and also the monthly mug, and believe you me he will justify its existence, with Danny Rogers finishing in second place. Barry Kennedy was the B Grade victor by 3 from Bill Roche, with consistent Walter Wotherspoon taking out C Grade on a countback from Ron Ferguson, and Ken McLean winning the putting comp.
Lismore
This Saturday Casino golfers will travel to Lismore for the interclub visit for the Michael, hope I can play Elk, as I had a crook back all last week!
Lismore golfers will return to Casino on Saturday week.
Last Saturday the July Medal was played in three grades, with Steve Williams playing very good golf to win the A Grade Medal with 64, by 2 from Mark Fraser and Serge Sliprail, with Steve Fredericks winning the gross with a 1 under par 69. Wayne McInnes showed that practice makes perfect when he took out the B Grade with 66 by 2 from Peter Owens and Ray Nugent, with Kevin Dalton taking out the gross section. Welcome back to the winners dais Bill Winterton after winning C Grade with 67, on a countback from John Owen and Ian Gailer, with Bill (tanker driver) Watts winning the gross. The course seems to be getting longer each week off the back tees and Ray Chilton will agree, as he easily took out the Bradman's trophy with a fine net 91. There's only one way Ray and that is up!
The ladies played a single stroke event last Wednesday and sponsored by Mary Gilhooley's, with Janine Martin winning Div 1 with 65 by 2 from Karen Molymeax, with Aida Kelly taking out Div 2 by 2 from Jan Jogers. Div 3 winner was Robin Gough, from Carol Hudson, with Pam Francis taking out Div 4 from Val Murray.

Increased Break-Ins Around Boat Ramps
We can only hope for a repeat performance of last week come this weekend.
Plenty of fish were around and as we went to press conditions looked to stay the same. So fingers crossed.
Again another report of vehicle break ins has crossed my desk. You hear about it all the time but there has been an increase of vehicle break ins at the Fishery Creek Boat Ramp of a night time.
In the old surfing days we use to blame the Queenslanders that come to the area surfing around school holiday time as this coincided with an increase of the vehicle break-in numbers.
But again we have that part of society, the scum or thief that still floats around with no conscience and steals what's not tied down. It's a violating feeling and soon turns to anger as what you have had stolen is no doubt possibly gone forever.
One tip that I do recommend from experience is that your PIN on your eftpos or credit cards is not your birth date. This is the first thing the thief will try and if he has your wallet no doubt your licence will be in there as well - with your birth date on your licence.
Two recreational fisherman from Sydney have been caught fishing illegally. The first had nearly one hundred tailor over the bag limit volume. That cost him $700.
The other bloke was unlawfully using a net. That cost him $600. Their fish were confiscated so they did not even get to taste their catch. There is a warning here to abide by the bag limits.
NSW Fisheries have appointed an Education Officer for the North Coast.
Their role is managing the volunteers under the Fishcare Program, developing local school programs, managing fish clinics and promoting better recreational fishing. They have been appointed by NSW Government in its commitment to better recreational fishing in country areas.
To the weekend's fishing and Byron is the spot for tailor at the moment. Seven Mile beach is another hot spot for tailor as well.
The bream are good in the Richmond. The best spot is the bream hole and the rocks behind the shops. Some nice flathead are around Burns Point to Pimilico with the odd school jew popping up.
At Evans some nice bream and luderick are getting along the north wall.
Further in the river it is a bit quiet.
Outside there is not much to report. A few squirey snapper is all that I have heard being caught. A lot of boats have been giving it a miss due to high wind reports.
This weekend Main Beach and Cosy Corner at Byron and the Brunswick Walls are the spots for tailor in that area.
Seven Mile Beach would be another one to highlight but around at Boulders it might be a bit quieter and usually better for tailor and bream.
South Ballina or Patches Beach would be a good chance. Locals know how to keep that neck of the woods quiet so it is always worth a shot.
If in the tinnie, the porpoise wall in The Richmond would be the spot for healthy size bream and flathead.
Don't forget about car security at the boat ramps, especially at night.
Until next week,
fun fishing.

Ballina Hoping to Bounce Back - Soccer Premier Division
After a shock 1-1 draw with last placed South Lismore last week, competition leader Ballina must win Saturday's home clash against Casino to restore confidence in the Seahorses' faltering campaign for their first premiership title.
Ballina failed to score from open play against a Souths defence that has leaked a massive 63 goals, the Seahorses' only strike coming from the penalty spot for Justin Stockham.
Ballina coach John Percival believes some good can come from the result.
"A result like that should shake any complacency out of the boys," Percival said.
"We only beat Casino 1-0 in our first game and we're expecting another tough one, but if the team doesn't perform there'll be changes made next week," he added.
With a full strength side Ballina will go in as favourites despite last week's result, while Casino have doubts over Mal Kenny and Nathan Gray starting.
The Cobras had a solid 2-0 win over Alstonville in their last start and need a win to stay in the chase for a top five placing.
Richmond Rovers could also be holding a share of the lead with Ballina, if they defeat Alstonville in Wednesday night's catch-up game and will again face Villa on Saturday at Oakes Oval from 3pm.
Striker Tim Sheridan is expected to resume his place in Rovers lineup, boosting their already formidable scoring potential, against a Villa lineup sharing the second last rung of the ladder with Goonellabah.
Another win for Rovers could set them on the path to their first minor premiership since 1986.
Rams seeing Red
Byron Bay will have revenge on their minds when the Rams host Lismore Thistles at 5pm on Saturday.
Thistles were the first side to beat the Rams when they met in round one, taking a hard-fought 1-0 win from a waterlogged Thistles Park to rob Byron of a valuable three points, that would have seen them still on the top of the ladder.
Central defender Evan Cooper returns to bring Byron Bay to full strength, while Thistles have player-coach Rod Lees unavailable, leaving experienced midfielder Darren Beardow in command.
Both sides had good wins last week, Byron giving Uni a 4-1 lesson, while the Blues pulled within two points of a top five berth with a gutsy 2-1 win over Workers.
While the Rams will be favoured, Thistles' tenacity proved the difference in their last encounter and will play a key role again on Saturday.
Consistency the Call
Italo Stars will be looking to get some consistency back into their game when they travel to Weston Park, Goonellabah to take on the Hornets on Saturday night from 6pm.
Confidence was high in the Stars camp after a 2-0 win over then leader Byron Bay two weeks ago, but last week's 2-0 loss to Maclean delivered a quick reality check.
Stars coach Jim Holmes said his team has some work to do.
"We need to get our feet back on the ground and find some consistency," he said.
"We don't expect another big win over them as we did in the first round, but we're playing for pride and it wouldn't matter who we were running out against, we want a good win."
Tim Casagrande will rejoin the side after missing the last two games, but Clint Willoughby is still nursing a calcified cork that could keep him out for a few more weeks.
Fourth placed Stars will go in firm favourites, but with Goonellabah determined to pull away from the relegation zone and upsets abounding in recent weeks, another surprise result could be in store.
Workers Wary
South Lismore has belied its lowly ranking by holding both Ballina and Thistles to draws in their last two starts, leaving Lismore Workers worried they could be next , when they meet at Richards Oval on Saturday from 5pm.
The Celtics damaged Ballina's hopes of their first premiership title with last week's 1-1 draw and could wreak just as much havoc on Workers.
The Redmen are clinging precariously to fifth place after a 2-1 loss to Thistles in their last start, leaving no room for error over the closing weeks.
Workers are expected to be at full strength and boasting the likes of silky midfielder Anthony Alvos, deadly striker Steve Morrissey and solid defenders Jason Toniello and Matthew Kelso, look hot favourites on paper.
But Ballina and Thistles also looked favourites 'on paper', before succumbing to a combination of their own complacency and Souths' raw enthusiasm.
Souths will be missing last week's goal scorer Matt Pope due to suspension, but with the rest of the Celtics lineup intact and fired up, Workers can expect a torrid night.
Maclean and Uni on the Brink
By their own high standards, defending premiers Maclean and Anzac Cup finalists Southern Cross University have both been premiership under-achievers so far, leaving the two on the brink of semi-final survival, when they meet at Maclean on Saturday from 3pm.
The winner will continue to entertain hopes of reaching the semis, while the loser can virtually kiss goodbye to their chances, in a real crunch game for both sides.
Maclean are six points short of the top five with Uni a point further in arrears, but with the students holding two games in hand, the pressure will be firmly on Maclean.
Last week's stylish 2-0 win over Italo Stars has re-kindled Maclean's legendary confidence and intensity, making them favourites over the students, who were solidly beaten by Byron Bay in their last start.
The main concern for Maclean will be the absence of 'keeper Neil Thomas and central midfielder Fraser Robinson.
Both are in Sydney trialing for the State 16's squad, with the absence of Thomas likely to cause the most heartache.
Thomas produced a superb save to deny the premiers' leading scorer Wayne Mortimer from the penalty spot last week, keeping Maclean in the game.
Hot Shots
The eventual winner of The Echo Hot Shots award will receive a weekend for two at a luxury Gold Coast resort.
Progress tally
12 - Wayne Mortimer (Stars).
11 - Troy Matthews (Rovers).
10 - Mitch Amidy (Uni), Bruce Morhaus (Byron), Justin Stockham (Ballina), Steve Morrissey (Workers).

Trip to Brissie for the Swans
Sunday saw a very one-sided competition between Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay in Far North Coast Junior Aussie Rules.
Brunswick showed their supremacy by defeating Byron Bay 18.12.120 to 8.6.66 in the under 14s.
While it was more even in the under 12s again Brunswick were the victors, winning 10.5.65 to the Maggies 7.4.46.
Other games in the round saw the Ballina Bombers make a flying visit to the Lismore Swans' nest. Mr T's Swans were on the wrong end of an otherwise good day of footy.
Ballina won easily 12.7.79 to Lismore's 4.7.31.
The next round will be Sunday, July 28, due to School Holidays and the Brisbane bus trip.
Everyone attending the Swans Bus Trip to the Gabba on Sunday, July 21, are reminded that the bus departs from Mortimer Oval opposite McDonalds at 9am.

Alstonville Win Silver in Water Polo
The Alstonville under 16 boys water polo team: Back row: Ian Ford (coach), Luke Chesworth, Josh jones, Lucas Wise.
Middle Row: Greg Fettell (trainer), Andrew Stevens, Hugh Darnell, Evan Gale, Cody Prasser, Rob Gale (manager).
Front Row: Jake Napoli (captain), Chris Lee, Jordan Lumb, Ryan Crowe, Clayton Fettell, Bill Johnson.
With the first game of the Bledisloe Cup on this Saturday Australia already have one up over New Zealand thanks to Alstonville.
The Alstonville under 16 boys water polo team won the silver medal at the 2002 Pan Pacific Youth Water polo team, held in Auckland, New Zealand, last week.
Alstonville was one of 17 teams who played in the tournament, along with the New Zealand National team, Australian State Teams, Combined high school teams and club teams from Australia and New Zealand.
The competition was fought out at an intensely high level throughout the five days of the tournament, to the final.
The young Alstonville side handled the pressure extremely well and performed exceptionally, making the final against the New Zealand National team.
Alstonville notched up an early lead in the final in a highly contested and physical game. New Zealand struck back though and at full time the score was locked at 9 goals each, forcing the final into extra time.
New Zealand slotted the winning golden goal, giving Alstonville the silver medal. This was an outstanding effort by the local boys, coached by Ian Ford, trained by Greg Fettell and captained by Jake Napoli.
At the medal presentation Alstonville received a tremendous round of applause from the Kiwis for the tremendous effort against their national side and the result in the final.
Both Clayton Fettell and Ryan Crowe from Alstonville received individual awards for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
Jake Napoli and Ryan Crowe went on to play for Queensland in the under 18 tournament which followed the 16s, where they came third and received bronze medals.

Netball Carnival Finalised
St John's College, Woodlawn, narrowly went down to Western Australia at the Australian Marist Netball Carnival which was held in Lismore last week.
The eighth Australian Marist Netball Carnival finals were held on Wednesday, July 3, at the Marie Mackney courts in Lismore.
Notre Dame College from Shepparton in Victoria won over Catholic College Bendigo, also from Victoria, in the final 30 to 21.
The local girls from St Johns College Woodlawn came 4th in the challenge division and played very well.
The host team Trinity Catholic College were placed 7th in the championship division.
Unfortunately none of the local girls made it into the Marist All Australian Squad however Rene Lowbridge from Trinity was highly commended.
Mrs Denise O'Brien, Trinity coach, was very pleased with the way the carnival went.
"The carnival was very successful, all the girls had fun and mixed well together and enjoyed playing teams from around Australia," she said.

Pioneers Halted by Seahorses - FNC Rugby Union
The talented Ballina backline finally cut loose last Saturday and ended Wollongbar's streak of wins with a 23-8 victory.
Fullback Jamie Coote sliced through the defence to score two tries, while the Ballina back row gave Wollongbar a lesson in getting to the breakdown quickly.
In further bad news for Wollongbar Dave Graham copped a serious knee injury, which looks to have put him out for the rest of the season. His strength and experience will be sorely missed by the Pioneers (probably not by opposing front rowers though) up front.
The Pioneers will play host to Mullumbimby this weekend.
The Moonshiners should be shaking at the prospect of taking on the wounded Pioneers.
Wollongbar are deservedly leading the competition and were undefeated until last weekend so will be keen to reassert their dominance over the opposition.
Lismore look to be back on track too with former leaguie Mark Sivewright hitting his straps and carving up Grafton like a country Mat Rogers.
Ballina come to Lismore for their game this weekend, which will provide strong clues as to how the remainder of the season will pan out.
Both of these teams have been under performing for the early part of the season but after last week showed, when they decide to get it together, they're great to watch. They both have all the elements of really good sides but they also still need as many points as possible to make sure they finish in the top four.
Lismore obviously have the advantage of home crowd support but Ballina appear to have found the cohesion they were lacking in the early part of the season - it should make for a very competitive game.
Byron Bay are having more trouble getting support than Cheryl Kernot at the moment and were forced to forfeit to Kyogle due to lack of players last weekend.
The Bay are drawn to play Casino at home this weekend and unless they can come up with a better incentive scheme than their rugby league counterparts (asking people to play the night before the game in the pub) Casino will win easily.

Jacky Makes the Sprites
Makara Jacky of Lismore was selected into the NSW Institute of Sport 'Sprites' netball program.
Lismore netballer Makara Jacky has shown a spirited performance by gaining selection into the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) 'Sprites' netball program.
The Sprites squad, consisting of around 30 players, is selected from over 200 netballers from the ten NSW regional academies.
While too young for NSWIS Scholarship selection, her selection is a clear sign that she will be closely supported and monitored by Netball NSW and NSWIS over the next 12 months. Sprite selection is considered as the final step before selection into the NSWIS Netball squad.
NSWIS Regional Coach Robert Wright travelled to Coffs Harbour recently to see the new Sprites in action while they train with the Academy squad.
"The foundation work by the Sprites netball associations and the higher level of training and athlete education provided by the Academy coaches has enabled these athletes to be brought to our attention," Wright said.
"I will be working with the Academy coaches to monitor and assess the Sprites progress. Using video is an excellent tool that overcomes the distance barriers between coaches and athletes," he added.
Academy coaches, Tracey Robinson (Goonellabah) and Maureen Clarke (Lennox Head) have been with the Academy since 1996. Despite living in regional NSW, both coaches were earlier this year selected as assistant coaches for NSW teams preparing for U17 and U19 national championships.
Supported by foundation partners NSW Sport and Recreation and Southern Cross University, the Academy runs nine sport specific enhancement programs for talented junior athletes. The Academy is also known for its Sport Smart program, coaching conference and workshops and its annual athlete subsidy scheme.

Upsetting the Apple Cart - Group One Rugby League
A couple of upsets in first grade Group One Rugby League last weekend have suddenly made the competition look a lot more even with only five weeks to go before the semi-finals.
Kyogle racked up their third win in as many weeks with an exciting 28-26 win over the Lower Clarence Magpies last weekend.
While Kyogle's good form comes too late to help them make the semis they are putting the pressure on the higher ranked teams to perform if they want the competition points.
This week it's the Grafton Ghosts turn to take on the Turkeys and while the Ghosts have the home advantage they'll have to play much better than they did in their 27-2 loss to Ballina last weekend if they want to beat Kyogle.
Grafton began the season very strongly but a string of erratic performances has seen them drop from second spot on the table to fourth in recent weeks and in danger of missing the semis if they don't regain their early season form.
Lower Clarence also appear to have hit a bit of a slump and they'll want to make sure of a big win over Workers Tigers this Sunday to restore some much-needed confidence.
The Tigers had a big 40-26 home win over the Byron Bay Red Devils last Sunday but the game was anything but pretty to watch.
The Devils had well below the necessary numbers to field a first and a reserve grade side so Byron players backed up and played two games. Byron were a man down for the entire second half after prop Aaron Hanna was marched for dangerous play so the Tigers' win may not be as impressive as it first seems.
The Tigers are also out of contention for the semis and have struggled for form this season. The Magpies won't want to be complacent for their home game against Workers though and will need to begin the game strongly to stamp their name on it.
In the other big upset of last weekend Brothers had a shock when they were defeated 32-28 by the South Grafton Rebels.
Despite the Rams' centre Paul Latta playing his usual brilliant brand of football and scoring two tries Brothers were unable to contain the Rebels.
South Grafton went to an early lead and kept it for the whole game, although Brothers didn't give up and scored two tries in the last ten minutes to reign the margin in.
Brothers will have a visit from second placed Ballina this Sunday at Crozier Oval, who will be looking to equal the Rams on the table.
After their big win over Grafton last weekend the Seagulls should be full of confidence to take on the Rams and the game should be one of the highest standard Group One can offer.
Despite their shock loss last weekend, Brothers really are the most disciplined and professional team in the comp and the smart money has to be on them at home this Sunday.
South Grafton will head to Casino to take on the Cougars for their game this Sunday.
If either team has semi final aspirations then they badly need the victory so you can expect a tough game.
Mullumbimby took care of the Cougars 22-10 last weekend and after beating Brothers the Rebels will be primed for another victory.
Casino have the ability to pull a win from almost anywhere - they just don't do it consistently, but they will certainly provide a tough opposition for the Rebels this Sunday.
Mullum will play host to Byron for their second local derby of the year, in a game the Giants are expected to dominate.
Byron just simply haven't been able to find enough players to field a consistent team and with Mullum heading up the table the Red Devils will struggle again this weekend.
The Giants are in second spot and with the pressure on to stay there, the home advantage and the natural derby atmosphere, Mullum should really win by a pretty big margin.
