A Warning to All
Caldera, a joint exhibition by artists Lucille Martin and Suvira McDonald, and currently on show at Lismore Regional Art Gallery, is inspired by the natural surroundings of Mt Warning.
The two artists collaborated to explore the landscape genre and understand the scientific and sacred aspects of the caldera, named Wollumbin (cloud gatherer) by the local indigenous people.
Together they have more than 50 years experience as artists. Lucille is a multimedia and installation artist. In Caldera, her works on cloth give an ephemeral sense of the terrain.
Lucille interprets the topographic contour lines of the caldera with a sewing thread. Her minimal response to the feminine and sacredness of the landscape is powerful, yet at the same time fragile.
Suvira is well-known for his award winning ceramics and these imaginative works are his response to both the beauty and environmental concerns about the caldera landscape, where logging is being proposed in the Wollumbin Forest.
The works include collaborative pieces and individual works. Suvira's extraordinary ceramic panels provide a visual map of the landscape, evoking the primitive volcanic forces that gave birth to Mt Warning and the caldera. His wood-fired ceramic process echoes the ancient geological processes.
Caldera is on show until May 12. Entry to the gallery is by donation.
