Millions of children around the world are counting down the sleeps until Christmas, but it's the day after, Boxing Day, that the fans of JRR Tolkien's epic masterpiece The Lord of the Rings have been waiting for.

This is when one of the most highly anticipated films ever opens in Australia, the first film in a series of three, The Fellowship of the Ring and going by the rave reviews flocking in from overseas it has been worth the wait. Just the preview trailer had me salivating for more.

To find a director with the creative vision necessary to capture the magic of Tolkien's books was always going to be a challenge, but New Zealand director Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures) has proved himself more than capable and together with a fine crew, an awesome cast and stunning New Zealand locations has brought the wondrous world of Middle Earth to life on the big screen.

Filmed simultaneously were the sequels, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, but fans are going to have to wait until the end of 2002 and 2003 for their release.

Amongst the huge main cast are Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian Halm as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen (receiving accolades) as Gandelf The Grey and Cate Blanchett as Lady Galadriel.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without an animated feature for the littlies, and this year's 'biggie' looks like being Monsters Inc. But when it's a collaboration between Pixar and Walt Disney, the talented combo that made the world laugh with Toy Story, and A Bug's Life, you know it won't just be the under fives having a good time.

And certainly the cast of Monsters Inc is one that most movie going adults will appreciate. John Goodman, Billy Crystal, James Coburn, and many other well known actors provide the voices of the monsters of Metropolis whose job it is to hide in the cupboards of children's bedrooms and terrify the little darlings into screaming.

It is these screams that create the energy that powers Metropolis. But the monster's world is thrown into chaos when a little girl enters their domain.

Looks like lots of fun! Merry Christmas!
