Arts NewsFascinating FacetsA new exhibition by graduates of TAFE NSW-North Coast Institute's Fine Art & Ceramics courses, Facets, will open this Friday, November 23 at the Lismore campus from 6pm. The exhibition features works by more than 35 artists - the first graduates of the Fine Arts Diploma (a three year course) and also graduates of the Certificate 2 in Ceramics (a one year course).
Ranging in age from early 20s to mid-50s, the artists have created a diverse array of artworks, from traditional works to contemporary pieces in printmaking, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and painting. The diversity in styles was encouraged by the class teachers according to artist Elizabeth Barnes Hewlett, who said they wanted each artist to fully explore their abilities. 'I think what makes the exhibition stand out is the amount of freedom the teachers gave us within the course - allowing us to follow our own vision,' Elizabeth said.
'We are a very different group of individuals and I think the different personalities come through in the works because we were encouraged and pushed to find our own unique style.'
Teachers include Ian Pearson, Robyn Sweaney, Christine Wilcocks, Steven Giese, Marlene Monks, Sandra Taylor and John Stewart - to whom the graduates all said a big thanks. The exhibition will be opened tomorrow by director of the Barebones Gallery in Bangalow, Ruth Ryan. Hospitality students studying at Lismore campus will provide catering throughout the evening and there will also be a performance by local all-female band Proum, a three-piece which plays modern, edgy jazz. The exhibition will be held upstairs in J Block and in the Drill Hall (follow the signs from the entrance across from Farmer Charlie's in Conway Street). Facets runs until November 30. |
