The Man Who Sued God (M)
Directed by Mark Joffe
There are plenty of real life Aussie battlers out there who would just love to have a chance to stick it to their insurance companies and while, in a truly just world, this would be possible, in this world the next best thing is watching Billy Connolly do it.
He does it well in this home-grown movie guaranteed to make you feel good. In a wonderful piece of casting Billy plays Steve Myers, a disillusioned lawyer who chucked it all in to become a cray fisherman on the beautiful south coast of Australia. He may not be the worlds best fisherman but at least he's happy - that is until a bolt of lightning completely destroys his fishing boat/home.
When the insurance company dismisses the claim and refuse to pay up, declaring it an 'act of God', Steve decides to sue the responsible party.
What do you get when an irate Scottish ex-lawyer takes on God's representatives? (God not being currently available, the heads of the churches must suffice.) Plenty of extremely lively repartee, that's what!
Sit back, watch the sparks fly and prepare to be entertained! Heading up the Aussie contingent of cast members is the superb Judy Davis as newspaper reporter Anna Denmark.
Davis' real life squeeze Colin Friels plays Steve's brother, Wendy Hughes is great as his exasperated ex-wife Jules and there are many more familiar faces amongst the rest of the fine cast.
Starring also is the south coast of Australia, with the sleepy little coastal town of Bermagui posing as the fictional Whaleboat Bay.
If you want a satisfying, witty and intelligent comedy, you can't go past The man who sued God.
(A note to lawyers who don't agree with this review: send the summons to my insurance company.)
