Bowled Over
Don't end up Desperate and Dateless...
Reminder to all men's clubs that if you wish your club's events to be listed in the 2002 District Calendar the closing date to notify Match Committee Chairman Kevin Locke, is October 21.
Please ensure he receives the details by phoning 6628 1814 or faxing 6628 7132.
Please note: South Lismore Bowling Club Men's Pairs is being held on Sunday, October 28, (not October 29 as previously mentioned), with starting time at 9am and the format being four rounds. North Coast Insurance Brokers are the generous sponsors and have donated $1,200 prize money which six teams will share. Entry fee of $30 per team includes lunch and after game snacks.
There is still time to nominate a team by phoning the club on 6621 3510. I apologise for the incorrect information and urge all men who enjoy pairs and good greens (by all accounts, you're doing a great job, Pat) to participate.
The Richmond Sporting Clubs Challenge Shield will be held at City Bowling Club this Sunday, October 21, commencing at 9.30am.
Teams of four (men, women or mixed) with no more than two registered bowlers are invited to register.
Cost of $20 per team includes a barbecue lunch and winners will receive $100 and the Shield. Casual clothes with Club shirts and flat-soled shoes are required.
This is a charity day supporting the North Coast Helicopter Appeal, which we all know performs a great service to the community, and a good response from bowlers and non-bowlers alike would be appreciated. Phone your team into the Club on 6621 5991.
Also this Sunday, the Vietnam Veterans are having a Social Lawn Bowls Day at City Bowling Club this Sunday, October 21, commencing at 9.30am which is open to all bowlers and non-bowlers.
This fundraising day will see all proceeds go to the 2LM Children's Christmas Appeal, a worthy cause indeed.
Play commences at 9am, mufti dress applies and the only requisite is that flat-soled shoes are worn. Some bowls are available for non-bowlers.
Great prizes are on offer and for a cost of $5, which includes lunch, this day represents value as well as an opportunity to show a community minded spirit. To register, phone the Club on 6624 3040, Tom on 624 4020, Peter on 6624 4888 or Sheldon on 6624 4486.
Here's one for the diary: the Palliative Care Day at Workers Heights Bowling Club will celebrate its tenth anniversary of the event on Sunday, November 11, the format being mixed fours, with team or single entry accepted.
Organiser, Joyce Cleaver is asking that all supporters from the past rally to the cause and assures new ones that they will be most welcome. More details to follow.
Coaching Tip
From David Bryant's book, Bowl To Win, I present some of his thoughts:
- Accurate drawing is the key to singles success.
- If you fall behind, do not resort to all or nothing shots.
- For the lead, two useful bowls in the head is more important than gaining shot.
- The second is the anchorman of the team.
- The third is effectively vice skip.
- The skip is solely responsible for tactics.
Umpire's Corner
Law 24 Marking a Toucher (cont'd)
If both directors or opponents agree that any subsequent movement of the bowl eliminates the necessity for continuation of the indicated provision, the bowl shall thereupon be marked or have the mark erased, as the case may be.
Care should be taken to remove the toucher marks from all bowls before they are played, but should a player fail to do so, and should the bowl not become a toucher in the end in play, the mark shall be removed by the opposing director or marker immediately the bowl comes to rest unless the bowl is indicated as a non-toucher in circumstances governed by earlier provisions of this law.
Until next week,
good bowling.

Summertime and the Fish are Jumpin'
It's that time of the year when you are up in the high reaches of the creeks or rivers chasing bass or mudcrabs when the ever present whining of a mosquito hums around your ear or a small sting on the leg reveals a hungry sand fly sitting there.
Welcome to the hot humid days of our approaching summer.
Every boat and car should have some form of repellent easily accessible.
Unfortunately most repellents usually wear off, as they are often required when humidity and temperatures are high and thus applied to perspiring skin.
The best repellent I have tried is that of Bushman Insect Repellents.
It is easy to apply, has an SPF sunscreen of 15+, is resistant to sweat and water and has an aroma that is hard to detect.
Like all the other brands it comes in roll-ons, creams and aerosols and is suitable for all ages.
Last weekend was a mixed bag of conditions. High temperatures, wind, rain and clear blue skies. We had it all over two days.
The fishing was a bit ordinary too, and conditions were not the most satisfactory.
Unfortunately, this weekend is shaping up to be the same but hopefully you can prove me wrong.
Wardell and Broadwater are looking good for flathead as the heavens are yet to open. I could not get a report on the Coraki area but I reckon the salt water would be making its way up there.
There are some flathead in the Evans river along with some big schools of stingrays. They are moving between the walls and the boat ramps. So if you want to try out your skills on light gear get down there with a pillie and have a go.
For the boats that are making it outside, there have been catches of parrotfish, snapper, trag jew, pearl perch and the odd cobia off Lennox, Ballina and Evans.
Lennox is quiet thanks to the wind and Ballina is not much better.
There have been some schoolies taken at night on the run-in tide in the Richmond on squid but a more likely wager is to use live bait.
At this stage my bet is Wardell or Pimlico for some flatties or whiting and I would drop the dillies along the edge of Pimlico Island while fishing as well.
That's all for this week. Hope you do catch something over the weekend.
Until next week fun fishing.
Wrecking Ball
SCU Lady Rat Courtney Smith offloading during Byron Sevens last weekend.
Local Byron allstar team 'The Wreck' finished the sevens with a flourish when they defeated the fancied Brisbane Fiji by 38-14 in the plate final last Sunday.
It was a result the crowd was happy with - as they were with all the other entertainment provided at the Byron rec ground throughout the weekend - a try-scoring bonanza, nude touch footy, an undies run by Queensland Uni students, try- scoring celebratory dances.
In a very successful weekend other local teams didn't take home any of the cash but that's not really the point of an end of season tournament anyway - the teams from Eltham, Lismore and Southern Cross University all put in where it counted and in this case that was off the paddock.
In the women's A grade Drummoyne Lady Buds defeated the Lloyd McDermott Graduates; B grade: Coffs Harlequeens beat University of Western Sydney MacArthur; men's A grade: Ngongotaha beat Brisbane Fiji 1 and men's C grade: Eskview were victorious over Helensvale.
He Drew First Blood...
Ballina bowler Shane Jacobs rolls the arm over against Souths.
Alstonville's Drew brothers took a total of 13 wickets from Lennox Head in the LJ Hooker League cricket last weekend.
Alstonville declared at 4-217 then the quick bowling brothers were given the ball. Brendan took 5-18 from just 8 overs and Anthony 3-15 from 9 overs in the first innings.
Things didn't get any easier for Lennox in the second innings as Brendan Drew again ripped through them taking 5-28 from 10 overs and making it a total of 10 wickets for the match. Lennox were facing the gruesome spectacle of beginning their season with an outright loss but managed to hold on until the end of the day's play. They scored 81 in their first innings (sundries by far the biggest contributor to the total with 25) and then were 9-98 at the end of their second innings, giving Alstonville a first innings victory.
Alstonville will take on Lismore Workers at Oakes Oval, Lismore, this weekend.
Workers suffered a first innings loss at the hand of Brunswick Heads - Byron Bay last weekend.
Workers batted first and knocked up a total of 128. Byron replied with 135 Lachlan Mckenzie top scoring with 37.
Workers quickly scored 72 without loss of a wicket in their second innings meaning Brunswick-Byron had a first innings win.
Brunswick-Byron are at home again against Eastern districts this weekend at Thompson Oval, Brunswick Heads.
Easts were comprehensively beaten by the Casino Cavaliers last weekend and lucky to finish the game without an outright loss.
Easts scored 100 then the Cavaliers declared at 8-201 mainly thanks to Adam Shields who totalled 91.
Easts then managed 6-95 in their second innings, finishing the first round with a first innings loss.
Tintenbar-East Ballina defeated Marist Brothers on the first innings after Brothers scored 152 then Tintenbar-East Ballina replied with 6-164.
In a very high scoring game at Nielson Park, East Lismore, Souths defeated the Ballina Bears on the first innings after replying to the Bears 133 by declaring at 6-228. The Bears finished their second innings at 7-173.
This weekend Norths-Goonellabah RSL will have their first match of the season when they take on Tintenbar-East Ballina at Saunders Oval, Ballina; Brothers play Lennox at Nesbitt Park, South Lismore; Southern Districts are up against the Casino Cavaliers at Nielson Park, East Lismore and the Ballina Bears have the bye.

A Trying Experience
Lou Togo (left), an ex-Lady Rat, gives a former teammate a demonstration of her new found tackling skills. Togo, a Lismore resident now living in Sydney, was back on the North Coast last weekend playing for the Lloyd McDermott development squad in the Byron sevens.
For Lou Togo the Byron sevens tournament last weekend meant more than a fun weekend playing footy in the sun.
Togo is a Southern Cross University graduate and former Lady Rat now working as a teacher in Sydney. She played her first rugby in Lismore as an undergraduate at Uni and continued to play in Sydney and has now been selected in the Lloyd McDermott development squad, a program that promotes participation in rugby for Aboriginal Australians and Torres Straight Islanders and help address career, professional and educational facets of life with these players.
'Our squad has girls as young as 15 to players over 30. The players are all united - no-one yells because the experienced players remember what it was like to be starting out,' Togo said.
Togo began playing rugby when she was at Southern Cross University but has found the pace in Sydney a bit more intense.
'I played for three years up here and it was great but down in Sydney the competition is a lot harder, the girls bigger and it's more serious. I've also got something to aim for because the Lloyd McDermott teams are all selected - you have to perform well to get to play. It's good - it gives you something to play for,' she said.
Togo has learned a lot from playing with the Lloyd McDermott squad.
'I started with the Lloyd McDermott squad after I saw an article in the local paper and rang up. I played in the Warringah tens tournament. I've learnt heaps. I was chucked into prop for sevens. The team members all talk and everything just kind of falls into place. It's difficult playing up here because you have to travel so much and you play against teams that don't have much experience,' she said.
Togo found it a strange experience to play against her mates in the Southern Cross University Lady Rats in the sevens.
'Playing against the Lady Rats was weird - I know how they all play. I said to them before 'don't you tackle me' but of course they did. It was good - before the game I was able to give my team tactics!' Togo said.
Togo was extremely happy to be back on the North Coast even for a short time.
'It's been great to be back here. My parents got to come and see me play. I'll be back - I'm a North Coast girl at heart,' she said.

Nominations Close Soon for Sporting
Volunteer of the Year
There's only one week left to nominate people for The Northern Rivers Echo Sporting Volunteer of the Year.
Referees, coaches, administrators, assistants, ball people and many others all provide their time so that teams can out on the paddock and do what they do best: play sport.
Now thanks to The Northern Rivers Echo, the NSW department of Sport and Recreation and Lismore City Council sportspeople have a chance to say thanks to those who volunteer to help with sport by nominating a volunteer for the North Coast Volunteers of the Year Awards.
Regional director of the department of Sport and Rec Paul Hernage believes the awards will help recognise the valuable contribution made to sport on the North Coast by Volunteers.
'The awards are aimed at showing community appreciation for individuals who volunteer their services so that local sport can exist,' Hernage said.
'To make this a reality community sport and recreation organisations are asked to nominate volunteers from their organisation who deserve recognition.
Nominees are to be individuals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to their organisation and should be in good standing with their sport. Spectators are not eligible as volunteers,' he said.
The awards are designed not as a competition but rather as a way to show community appreciation for individuals who selflessly give their time so that local sport can exist.
If you know someone who you think deserves recognition for their contribution to sport then make sure you nominate them soon as nominations for the awards close on October 26 and recipients will be announced on November 2.
Nomination forms can be obtained through your sporting club, at the department of Sport and Rec offices, at Lismore City Council Offices in Goonellabah or at The Northern Rivers Echo (218 Molesworth Street, Lismore).
