Heartfelt Art Finds Beauty

Violet-Maie Scott never received formal artistic training, but after viewing her new exhibition Touch, you're left with the impression she's a real professional.

Currently on display at Caddies, her show features works Violet has created over the last two years using what she describes as her 'perfect' medium - felt.

'Felt has so many different properties and the different ways to use it are limitless - I feel this is just a beginning and I don't think I've discovered even half of its potential,' Violet-Maie said. 'When I use felt I feel like I am painting with it rather than constructing a textile... it translates onto the canvas almost as beautifully as oil paint.'

Having grown up in the bush, the Mt Burrell resident and grandmother of three has a strong connection with nature, which is evident in the theme of her artworks.

And while Violet has been an artist for years, she says it wasn't until the death of her son in 1997 that she allowed herself to explore her artist abilities and focus on art in earnest.

'Since he died I've cut away a lot of the things in my life that are superfluous and now I focus on what is really important to me, and that's creating beauty,' she said.

'I create art for pleasure. The exhibition is not an intellectual exercise in any way shape or form, it's simply exploring my enjoyment of the textile and the environment.'

Touch is on show until the end of October.
