Rush Hour 2 (M)
Directed by Brett Ratner
Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan in Rush Hour 2
It's fairly inevitable in the land known as Hollywood that any film which grosses a cool $250 million will spawn a sequel, or two, or three. With notable exceptions of course. (Thelma and Louise 2 - the other side of the canyon? I don't think so!)
To have that sequel outshine the original is not nearly so common but they've done it with Rush Hour 2.
As the blurb goes: 'Get ready for the second rush!' And get ready for the dynamic duo of motor-mouth funny guy Chris Tucker and the incredible Jackie Chan. Can that guy kick ass or what?!
As Chinese police officer Chief Inspector Lee, Chan gets to play straight man to the full-on Tucker and this time they're on Lee's turf, the bustling city of Hong Kong.
Carter (Tucker) is over for a holiday, taking time out to hang with his best buddy and looking to get a little action. Action with the ladies, mind you - definitely not the kind Lee has in mind, involving Triads, parcel bombs, a multi-million dollar counterfeit racket and lots of awesome fights.
Although Carter does get hot and bothered with one very sexy female, the formidable Hu Li (Zhang Zi-Yi of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), but not in the way he envisioned...
Of course it's blatantly obvious if you don't like Jackie Chan, can't stand martial arts movies and loathe Chris Tucker's comedy, then this probably isn't the movie for you.
But if, like me, you're blown away by Chan's masterful talent and sheer inventiveness when it comes to pulverizing the bad guys, then you're in for a good time.
The chemistry he and Tucker have on screen makes for one of the best buddy action flicks I've seen in ages.
Fast paced and lots of fun with fantastic stunts. (And make sure you hang around for the out-takes during the final credits).
