You Are My Obsession

A new exhibition by second and third year students from Southern Cross University's ceramics and glass studio, Self: Obsessed/ Assessed, is currently on show upstairs at the Lismore Regional Art Gallery.

The students have produced thought-provoking artworks using sculptural ceramic forms, glass and multi-media to deal with notions of self and identity.

'In terms of a group exhibition, it's an exploration of self and identity and the way that is formed and expressed,' exhibitor, Ishtar Wilson, said.

'All the projects were actually self-motivated and created separately, but they all seem to have that link - in some way exploring notions of self - hence the name of the exhibition. On a deeper level however, the exhibition is very diverse because each individual is exploring a very different aspect of identity.

'One of the works explores regrets and the process of letting go of those regrets, while another relates to language and the different dynamics within families and between people.'

Ishtar has created a work using fragments of porcelain body impressions, bronze casts and string. She says it was inspired after a close friend committed suicide in 1999.

'While the thoughts and ideas stemmed from that suicide, the work itself it not about suicide,' she said. 'It's more about the unknown spaces in people's lives - like when one job or relationships ends, nothing else has begun and you don't know what's coming. It's about that space, that limbo... standing on a cliff before you take that leap.'

Exhibiting artists are Ishtar Wilson, Susan Davdison, Bianca Sumar Hillman, Laura McEwan, Kimberley Morrissey, Harmony Pearce, Robyn Rakisch, Anna Sjostrand, Dawn Thirlaway and Simone Tops.

Don't forget that's it's you last chance to vote for your favourite portrait in the Gallery's Living Regional Treasure exhibition. The most popular work will win the $1000 Northern Rivers Echo People's Choice Award.

  • Self: Obsessed/ Assessed continues until October 21.
