Legally Blonde
Directed by Robert Luketic
Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) proves blondes have more brains and more fun
If you want to forget the woes of the world for 90 minutes (and who doesn't), boy have I got the film for you! And it's great fun as well.
I'm talking about the pure escapism otherwise known as Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon and directed by Aussie Robert Luketic.
It's a classic case of don't judge a book by its cover (or judge the intelligence of a woman by the colour of her hair).
When perky blonde Elle Woods (in a wonderful performance by Witherspoon) is dumped by her snobby wannabe senator boyfriend, Warner Huntington the Third (Matthew Davis), because she's more 'Marilyn' than 'Jackie', she decides to prove him wrong.
Kissing her Delta Nu sorority sisters goodbye, with Bruiser, her fashion conscious chihuahua beside her, and her pantechnicon of essential items following closely behind, Elle (named after the magazine of course) heads off for Harvard to study law and win back Warner in the process. And neither Warner nor Harvard realises what's about to hit them.
To some, Legally Blonde will appear nothing but a bit of fluff - cliched and over the top. But scratch beneath the surface and you'll find a very clever, satirical comedy with a script full of surprises. And like its bouncy leading lady, so much about this film is too cute for words - especially the dog - as well as being funny and at times quite touching.
Speaking of its star, the filmmakers chose well.
Reese Witherspoon proves once again what a talented actress she is, taking a potentially shallow character and giving her real depth and heart. After all, looks are only skin deep and beneath all of Elle's Malibu Barbie glamour, under the lip gloss, nail polish, high heels and ditzy outfits is a sweet, positive person of substance - whose favourite colour just happens to be pink!
So look for deeper meaning if you want to, or just go and enjoy some lightweight, feelgood entertainment with a guaranteed, cuddly happy ending.
And don't we all need one of those occasionally.
