Along Came a Spider (M)
Directed by Lee Tamahori
Morgan Freeman returns as the world-weary Dr Alex Cross.
I like Morgan Freeman. I think he's a very competent, credible, and convincing actor whose talent is often far superior to many of the movies he appears in.
One such disappointment was 1997's Kiss The Girls, from the James Patterson novel of the same name. The best thing about that movie was Freeman's restrained performance as forensic psychologist Dr Alex Cross.
Now, like Arnie, he's back! Appearing once more as the world weary Cross in the adaptation of another Patterson novel Along Came a Spider, which thankfully has turned out more successfully than its predecessor.
This is a good thriller. From the riveting opening prologue to a final unpredictable twist, Along Came A Spider delivers - and at such a pace that its flaws are barely discernible. Sure, they're there, but unless you're really picky they won't detract from the movie.
Washington DC police detective and psychologist Dr Alex Cross is on stress leave when he gets a mysterious phone call. It's the kidnapper of 12-year-old Megan Rose (Mika Boorem of The Patriot).
He doesn't want money, he isn't a sexual predator - he's seeking fame and infamy, and he wants Cross' assurance that he'll get it in exchange for the life of the senator's daughter.
Assisting Cross on the case is Special Agent Jezzie Flanagan (Monica Potter). She's in disgrace for failing to prevent the kidnapping, despite elaborate precautions and surveillance at Megan's school.
Directed by Once Were Warriors' Lee Tamahori, the cast also includes Michael Wincott as Megan's teacher, Dylan Baker as the federal agent in charge of the investigation, and Michael Moriarty and Penelope Ann Miller as Senator Rose and his wife.
While all the performances are good, (even Potter whom I was dubious about), the two who most impressed were Morgan Freeman and the young Mika Boorem. Her portrayal of the young kidnap victim is extremely believable.
Fans of the crime thriller genre should e very happy with Along Came A Spider. It grabs hold and won't let go. Totally engrossing.
