A Love of Landscape

A three month trip through England and Europe has been a source of inspiration for local artist Brenda Shero's latest exhibition, Landscapes of Love with Tokens of Affection, now on show at Caddies.

While travelling through England and Italy Brenda found herself spotting signs on the roadside which referred to forests along the way. However, to her dismay, they didn't appear to exist anymore. The experience has led Brenda to create a series of artworks which predominantly feature trees as a disappearing life forms, although sometimes the tree-like images are suggestive of human forms.

The colourful and vibrant artworks have been likened to those of Mambo artist Reg Mombassa and while she is flattered by the association, she didn't encounter his works until long after she had developed her own distinctive, bold style

Brenda uses acrylic on canvas , which she says is more a necessity than a desire.

'I'm a mother with a family and my studio is in the home so I like to use a medium with a relatively low level of toxic fumes,' she said. 'I'd actually probably prefer to use oil paints but I'm just not in a studio situation where I can. I am a great believer in responding to artwork on an aesthetic level and I want to share what I do and give pleasure to the viewer.

'I'm interested to see how people respond visually to the works and to see if the titles associated with the artworks makes any further connections for them.'

The exhibition runs until August 31.
