Pictures Speak Louder

Rather than hold another public meeting on the impact of drugs in town, the Kyogle community created something quite unique to tackle the issue – an art exhibition.
The exhibition, Drugs in Our Town, is a collaborative community art project featuring both artists and non-artists who have worked together over the past few months.
The outcome is a 3D patchwork consisting of more than 200 individual artworks installed within a grid to make one large artwork that occupies the entire gallery space.

Local communities and individuals have produced the artworks using ideas from recent workshops and discussion groups on drugs, as well as using their own personal views.

As well as the patchwork itself there are also images, artist's statements, text and photographs documenting the community project.

Entry to the Roxy Gallery, Kyogle, is by donation.

'The artwork is one image composed of many individual images – the concept was that Drugs in Town would allow the community to express itself to itself,' project organiser Linda Woodrow said.

'The collective of individual and collaborative artworks express the diverse views on the impact drugs have on our town. And it's great to see such a variety of ages getting involved, with artists ranging from seven to 70.'

As well as the patchwork itself there are also images, artist's statements, text and photographs documenting the community project.

Entry to the Roxy Gallery, Kyogle, is by donation.

Drugs in our Town is on show until Wednesday, August 15.
