New Play Tackles Suicide

Suicide is something not often talked about openly in today's society, something which the members of the Teenage Drama Company are determined to change with their new production, Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note.

The play centres around a 16 year-old boy, Jake, who finds a suicide note in his mailbox. While his friends laugh and joke about it, Jake becomes obsessed with finding the note's author. The play then looks at the different effects the suicide note has on each character and their unfolding emotional dilemmas.

It's certainly raw and confronting theatre (although not without humour), which according to one of the actors, makes it a great learning tool for both themselves and the audience.

"All of us know someone who has thought about or tried to commit suicide," 15 year-old actress, Zoe Abraham, said.

"Without trying to we've been analysing our own problems and suicide related experiences and dealing with our emotional issues as we rehearse the play. Lots of parents are too scared to talk about suicide so it's important for us to take the issue to the parents.

"Adults often forget what it's like to be young and wonder why we act the way we do. This will give them an insight into what's like to be young and encourage discussion with their children around the issue of suicide."

The play was written by award-winning Canadian playwright, Lindsay Price, and is directed by Emma Wappett. Despite being set in a country half a world away, other than the odd TV reference you would never guess it's not Lismore or Ballina.

Lighting and sound will be done by ACE light and sound training course students, and because the concert is free the actors will sell cake and coffee to raise money for their next production.

Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note will performed this Friday and Saturday, July 6-7 at the Conservatorium's Concert Room from 7pm.
