Rosamund Pike discovers this zombie hasn't been keeping up his brushing & flossing routine.
Doom (M)
Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak
I'm not a huge fan of films based on computer games. They usually leave a lot to be desired, namely a decent plot and script. But I am a big fan of zombie movies, especially if they scare the bejeebers out of you. Doom promised to do that. I also can't remember ever having seen a zombie movie set on Mars so that caught my interest as well.
The computer game Doom, on which this film is based, has a legion of worldwide fans, so the filmmakers knew they had a guaranteed audience salivating to see their favourite pastime transformed into a big screen sci-fi action blockbuster. What's more, it stars The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson.
Someone or something is killing the scientists at a remote research station on Mars. The place is in lockdown, quarantine has been enforced and the marines are on their way, led by Sarge (The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban). Known as the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, their mission is simple, or so they think! Nothing must escape alive!
Doom is a blatant rip-off of Aliens, Alien v Predator and practically every zombie movie ever made. The characters are so stereotypical it's almost funny. But putting aside those shortcomings, the chills and thrills come thick and fast and the zombie action is non-stop from the very first second.
And really, what more do you want from a zombie movie set on Mars starring The Rock? We're hardly talking Academy Awards material here. What Doom's audience wants and what they get is action, action and more action. Throw in some hunky stars to perv at, a spunky heroine (Rosamund Pike from Pride and Prejudice), heaps of gooey zombies and a lot of really big guns and you have just over 90 minutes of full-on trashy entertainment! Rock on!
