A Good Woman (PG)
Directed by Mike Barker
Piercing
look #264. To be used only in the event of an Oscar Wilde adaptation.
Fancy a sumptuous feast for the eyes and a script jam-packed full of witty
repartee and classic Oscar Wilde quips?
Then I highly recommend A Good Woman, starring the actress of the moment, the
talented and gorgeous Scarlett Johansson as Mrs Meg Windermere.
It's the 1930s and Meg is spending the summer on the picturesque Italian Amalfi
coast with her handsome hubby of one year, Robert (Mark Umbers). It's a playground
of the rich and famous, popular with Brits and Americans alike, and the number
one activity amongst holidaymakers is gossiping.
So you can imagine how tongues are wagging with the arrival of New York femme
fatale and infamous husband seducer, Mrs Stella Erlynne (Helen Hunt), especially
when she immediately gets her claws into Robert, luring him to her apartment again
and again - much to the delight of notorious playboy Lord Darlington (Stephen
Campbell Moore), who fancies the beautiful Meg.
Meanwhile, Mrs Erlynne has her own unwanted suitor, the much-divorced millionare
Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson).
Based on Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, this romantic comedy guarantees
to satisfy even the most discerning viewer. One who prefers to leave their brain
firmly ensconced in their skull and not parked at the door.
But despite its stellar performances, top-notch cast and mouth-watering scenery
I did have one itty-bitty problem with this film... Which man in his right mind
would be having it off with Helen Hunt when he has a hottie like Scarlett Johansson
waiting for him at home?
(Maybe you should ask Jude Law or the Scud or Prince Charles or... Ed).
