Wedding Crashers (M)
Directed by David Dobkin
Don't
invite these guys to your wedding. They'll come anyway...
First there was 'The Rat Pack', then for Gen Xers, 'The Brat Pack'. For this
lucky generation (what letter are we up to now?), there's a talented ensemble
known as 'The Frat Pack'. Two of its leading men are Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn
and the romantic comedy Wedding Crashers is their latest marketing device for
their heartthrobability.
Jeremy (Vaughn) and his best buddy John (Wilson) are divorce mediators. They're
also two single guys with a unique way of meeting horny single women - they crash
weddings. One minute they're wishing the bride and groom well, the next, they're
shagging the bridesmaids!
Everything is peachy until they crash the wedding of the year where the bride's
father just happens to be the US Secretary of the Treasury, William Cleary (Christopher
Walken).
John has set his sights on number one bridesmaid Claire Cleary (Rachel McAdams).
Only problem is, she's already engaged and her fiancé is a jerk. Worse
yet, a rich jerk. Plus he's caught the unwelcome attention of Mrs Cleary (Jane
Seymour), the Senator's frustrated wife.
Meanwhile, Jeremy has troubles of his own. He's scored with the Senator's youngest
daughter, Gloria (Isla Fisher), and now she won't leave him alone. When she declares
she's in love with him he knows it's time to make tracks out of there, but John
breaks wedding crasher's rule number five and refuses to leave. Before they know
it the two of them have been invited to join the Cleary gang for the weekend and
that's when the fun really begins.
Vaughn, Wilson and Walken are always good value and despite an obvious plot,
there's plenty to like. Vaughn gets all the best lines and Isla Fisher is hilarious
as the kooky Gloria.
Unfortunately the film drags on too long and goes from being funny to just
plain soppy. Wilson's character, in particular, loses the plot. And some of the
incidental characters are just too extreme to be believable and they're not even
funny, just weird. And not in a good way.
But it's not all bad. In fact, lots of it is very good. I just wish there had
been more comedy and less romance. But then, what should you expect at a wedding?
