Puppets and papers for Saturday fun
Get
some creative, local, innovative and cheap fun next Saturday (July 30) at noon
at Lismore's Star Court Theatre, when Kyogle's Krinkle Theatre present Tightrope.
Krinkle have won awards for their shows which combine puppetry and theatre
with crafting characters from scraps, newspapers and rubbish.
This performance will be a 'sayonara' show before they fly out to Korea to
be part of the Chuncheon International Puppetry Festival. They performed
earlier this year at Australia's celebration of puppetry at Blackheath.
One of the wonderful things about the shows Lara Cruikshank, Padi Bolliger
and Gabrielle Griffin are creating is that the entire story is told without verbal
English.
This makes their stories accessible across language barriers, and also means
they are totally entertaining for those with less than great hearing.
Last year NORPA helped Krinkle along with a C-Lab grant, which saw the team
performing waist-deep in local papers (including this one!) in a shop window on
Carrington Street developing Suit Yourself in front of a live local audience.
The story in Tightrope is about a relationship between two businesspeople,
and how desire takes over and takes them on a journey of discovery.
Entry to the performance is just $5 at the door.
Events and giveaways
One award-winning act performing in Lismore on the weekend would be pretty
exciting news. But this weekend we've got three entirely different, world
class award-winning artists in town for our Midwinter Music Weekend. And
there are still some tickets left.
The weekend kicks off with Paul Capsis from 8pm Friday night at the City Hall.
Paul won a Green Room award in 2004 for Best Cabaret Artist, and a Robert Helpmann
Award for best live music presentation for Capsis Vs Capsis at the Sydney Opera
House. Some of the songs from that show will be performed in Lismore.
Capsis was also nominated for an AFI Award for best supporting actor for his role
in Head On, directed by Ana Kokkinos. He sang at Russell Crowe's wedding,
and Tim Freedman from the Whitlams was so won over by his talents, his label produced
Capsis' debut album last year.
Ruby Hunter almost needs no introduction, nor does her partner Archie Roach.
Both are award-winning Australian Indigenous musicians, who will share the autobiographical
work, Ruby's Story, with locals on Saturday night at the City Hall from 8pm.
The piece, composed and performed with Paul Grabowsky's Australian Art Orchestra,
was rapturously received at Adelaide festival, and has just toured Mexico and
parts of South America.
Sunday night stars H'Sao, who won a bronze medal at the Francophone (French-speaking)
Games in Montreal. Childhood friends and relations, the six piece from Chad
combine the song, dance and grooves of Africa for a tremendous night of entertainment.
Show starts at 8pm -- dress to bop.
Tickets for all three shows are available from the Northern Rivers Ticket Centre,
phone 6621 5600.
