The Fantastic Four (PG)
Directed by Tim Story
Johnny
Storm aka the Human Torch, is definitely the hottest CGI super hero yet to hit
the big screen.
Fantastic! Another comic book adaptation! Although to be fair I found The Fantastic
Four to be an entertaining no-brainer, just perfect for the school holidays. After
all, who wants to think when you don't have to!
Based on the Marvel comic, the attractive cast includes Ioan Gruffudd of Hornblower
fame as geeky boffin Reed Richards. He used to have a thing for sexy scientist
Sue Storm (Dark Angel's Jessica Alba) but she's now hanging out with billionaire
Doctor Victor Von Doom (Aussie spunk and Nip-Tuck star Julian McMahon). Sue's
air-head brother Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) is also employed by Victor, much to
the horror of Reed's right hand man, Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis).
Unfortunately for Reed and Ben they are completely broke and the only way they
can continue their important scientific research is to eat humble pie and go to
work for Von Doom. Everything is peachy until the five of them are nuked with
cosmic radiation while on board Victor's space station.
When they get back to Earth they discover their DNA has been altered and they
all gained fantastic superpowers. The media tag Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny 'The
Fantastic Four' and it will take all of their new skills combined to outwit and
take down their nemesis, Doctor Doom.
Fans should be delighted with this movie version as it retains the true character
of the comic book and original Fantastic Four series.
The special effects are suitably, err, fantastic, there are plenty of laughs,
provided mainly by Chris Evans, and it's not too scary so it can be enjoyed by
all ages. My nine-year-old nephew gave it a big thumbs up and a score of four
out of five. But when you're a little older, you're not so generous.
