Mr and Mrs Smith (M)

"OK
Angelina, just hang back a minute while I take care of my divorce..."
The much anticipated blockbuster Mr and Mrs Smith starring two of Hollywood's
hottest hotties, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, has finally arrived on our big
screens in a hail of bullets. Was it worth the wait?
Despite the fact it's directed by one of my favourite directors, Doug Liman
of Go and The Bourne Identity fame, I went into this film with fairly low expectations
having heard some less-than-flattering reviews.
Brad and Angelina star as John and Jane Smith, a not-so-happily married couple
who are having counselling in an attempt to save their marriage. They've been
together for six years but neither of them has any idea that they are both assassins.
The fun begins when they discover the truth and believe me, more than sparks
fly as these two hired guns do their best to eliminate each other. Things get
really exciting when contracts are placed on both their heads. Suddenly Mr and
Mrs Smith are fighting to save more than their marriage.
I'm happy to say I had a good time at this movie. Like I said, I wasn't expecting
great things, but it was pacey, witty, action-packed and basically just a whole
bunch of fun. And let's face it, Brad and Angelina sure aren't hard on the eyes.
Angelina looked particularly fetching in her little black dominatrix outfit, much
I'm sure to Jennifer's consternation. That Angelina dolly must resemble a pin
cushion by now. Meow! Claws at ten paces! Unfortunately it's not all good news.
The script is full of laughs but you really have to tune in to hear them: lots
of the dialogue is barely audible above the explosions.
But if you like your action full-on and frenetic you're in luck and the car
chase scene is particularly exciting.
Mr and Mrs Smith doesn't stand up to intense analysis - this is an entertaining,
park-your-brain-at-the-door action smash full of extremely attractive eye-candy.
But if you insist on extracting a "message" from amongst the debris
it would be the bleeding obvious: any relationship based on lies is doomed from
the start. Good fun!
