Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
Directed by John Pasquin
Miss USA and TJ Hooker meet the gimp...
I'm a big fan of Sandra Bullock, I'm just not that crazy about her movies - with the exception of Speed and the bright and bubbly feel-good flick Miss Congeniality.
Trying hard to forget the regrettable sequel Speed 2 I went into Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous prepared to enjoy myself and (hopefully) have a good laugh. The verdict? Well it doesn't join that elite group of sequels that are on a par with the original but it's still a lot of fun.
Taking up the story three weeks after FBI field agent Gracie Hart was named runner-up at the Miss United States pageant, Armed and Fabulous begins on a high note with an exciting bank heist that turns sour thanks to Gracie's new found celebrity status.
Unable to work undercover anymore Gracie becomes "the face of the Bureau," a job that requires her to have her own stylist (Diedrich Bader), hair and make-up girls and of course a bodyguard (Regina King). But babysitting an FBI Barbie was not why Sam Fuller (King) joined the Bureau and she hates Gracie's guts.
Despite this everything is going relatively smoothly until Gracie's friend Cheryl, the reigning Miss United States (Heather Burns) and pageant emcee Stan Fields (William Shatner) are kidnapped. The last thing Gracie is prepared to do is sit around signing copies of her book while her friends are in danger. Those kidnappers had better look out! Gracie's not only armed and looking fabulous, she's extremely pissed off!
I never thought I'd hear myself say this but I really missed Benjamin Bratt in this sequel. Yep, he's a no-show and the result is a broken hearted Gracie Hart. Who wants that!
I want light-hearted, feel-good snorty laughs and plenty of them.
Thankfully things soon pick up and although it is no equal to the original, Miss Congeniality 2 still tickles the funny bone. Sure it's silly but we're not talking Oscar material here after all. Park your brain at the door and enjoy yourself.
