Police arrested and charged a 39-year-old Casino man with assault, firearm offences and possession last Wednesday after an incident at a Casino hotel. Police were called to the Canterbury Street business around 6pm, where the man was being detained by security guards. After being refused entry, the man assaulted one of the staff and was arrested. A search later revealed the man had two knives, a pistol, a baton, another blade and an amount of cannabis. He will appear in Casino Court on April 20.
Police are seeking witnesses after the window of a business was smashed in Keen Street, Lismore, around 7.45pm last Wednesday. A male was seen in the vicinity and apparently fled from the scene. Any information to Lismore Police on 6623 1599.
Ballina Police are continuing investigations following the drowning an elderly couple at Seven Mile Beach in Lennox Head last Wednesday. Shortly after 1pm 72-year-old Peter Kirkwood of Cleveland and 80-year-old Catharina Ilgen from the Netherlands went swimming and apparently got caught in a strong rip. Surfers at the beach saw the couple in trouble and brought them back to shore, but they could not be revived.
A B-double fully laden with around $600,000 worth of coffee crashed and rolled on the Bruxner Highway near Parrot's Nest around 12.45pm on Sunday. The vehicle was travelling west when it rolled onto its left side and slid around 100 metres down a slight embankment. The driver was able to free himself and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital with minor injuries. Police are investigating what caused the accident.
