When Lindsay Hunt finds himself feeling overwhelmed with what he describes as "bleak, grim and dark times", he sits down and paints a little humour into his life. The Modanville-based artist's new exhibition The Soul in Aspic and Other Difficulties, which is now on show at Armistead's Gallery, gives people an insight into Lindsay's irreverent and satirical way of thinking. The exhibition features an interesting collection of oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings, as well as mixed media works and sculptures, which each have a lot to say about life in the 21st century. Often influenced by Greco-roman mythology, stories of the Underworld and the journey of the soul, Lindsay's works have a deep and thoughtful quality that speaks volumes. But then again, he also doesn't like to be taken too seriously. Humour is his primary medium and with titles like "The soul of a banal object burning on the outskirts of Hell #1" and "Self portrait of the artist: future projection somewhere in a nursing home", it's easy to get an idea of Lindsay's tongue-in-cheek take on life. The Soul in Aspic and Other Difficulties opens tonight (Thursday, March 17) at Armistead's Gallery in East Lismore from 6pm. It will be on show until March 30. |
