'Hey Albert, check out The Echo - she says I'm a hunky nice guy, but you're a short, dumpy klutz! She only gives us three stars. Let's go see the editor!'
I'm a big fan of hunky nice guy Will Smith and I was looking forward to this change of pace for him, a romantic comedy. Sure, he's best known as an action star, but could he pull off a romantic lead?
Smith plays Alex Hitchins, Manhattan's 'Date Doctor'. He had his heart broken by his own first love and now makes his living advising men how to win the woman of their dreams and (hopefully) live happily ever after.
The biggest challenge of Hitch's career is Albert Brennnaman (Kevin James from TV's King of Queens). He's a short, dumpy klutz of an accountant who happens to be head-over-heels in love with his company's most important client, the very rich and very beautiful Allegra Cole (supermodel Amber Valletta). Major problems arise when the best friend of gossip columnist Sarah Melas (the very yummy Eva Mendes) gets burnt (metaphorically) by a sleazy bastard who claims to have been coached by Hitch. Sarah sets out to expose the love consultant, blissfully unaware that she's been dating him! Sorry to say I was rather disappointed with Hitch. It just wasn't as funny as I expected and the whole thing was basically one big male fantasy. Admittedly Eva Mendes and Amber Valletta weren't mud wrestling naked but the whole concept was still pretty unbelievable. And call me old fashioned but I have a problem with relationships that are built on lies. Eventually you're going to discover that the dream guy you've been dating is actually a complete wanker. But hey, that's just me. Looking on the bright side there were some good laughs and Will Smith is as affable as ever. And yes, he does make a very good romantic leading man. All the other actors put in good performances as well, the whole thing looks pretty and the soundtrack rocks. So why am I whinging? Go check it out for yourself!
