Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (PG)

Written and directed by Kerry Conran

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (PG) with Angelina Jolie, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow Angelina Jolie, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow star in Sky Captain...

In this science fiction homage to the 1930s, Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Polly Perkins, a New York reporter investigating the strange disappearances of world-renowned scientists. Having just received a vital clue concerning a certain Dr Totenkopf, (played by a very dead Sir Laurence Olivier!) she is horrified to discover the city is under attack from giant robots.

It's up to her old squeeze, Captain Joseph 'Jo' Sullivan, aka Sky Captain (Jude Law) and his trusty Flying Legion to save the day and New York. But when Jo's buddy and inventor extraordinaire Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi) is kidnapped, he and Polly must embark on a perilous journey to Nepal in search of the elusive Dr Totenkopf, the one person who may know what's going on...

I'm the first to admit the filmmakers have done an excellent job at recreating that 1930s ambience, thanks to some pretty amazing CGI. In fact this is the first feature film to use 100 per cent CGI backdrops.

If that impresses you and you're a fan of pop culture and have a soft spot for all those early sci-fi series like Superman, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon then Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow should be right up your alley. Personally I've always found those shows terribly corny and a bit of a bore, and this was no exception. I had to pinch myself to stay awake.

And while the fuzzy focusing contributed to the 1930s cartoon-like look, it also contributed to my pounding headache. Plus, to be perfectly honest, I found Polly Perkins extremely annoying. She reminded me of Lois Lane, a character I always thought was a major pain in the butt.

All in all I found this a bit of a yawn, with more style than substance. Not my idea of a good time.
