Elektra (M)

Directed by Rob Bowman

Elektra with Jennifer Garner, Goran Visnjic, Kirsten Prout, Will Yun Lee, Natassia Malthe, Bob Sapp, Chris Ackerman, and Terence StampJennifer Garner, in the title role as Elektra, lets out a sai (or two).

Fans will probably hate me for saying this but I'm a bit over films based on comic books. Especially spin-offs of them and that is what Elektra is. We were first introduced to the beautiful but deadly assassin played by Jennifer Garner in Daredevil where she was the love interest of Matt Murdock (Ben Affleck).

This time around she gets to star in her own movie and there's no sign of her handsome co-star. Instead she has the hots (and who can blame her!) for Mark Miller, played by the very yummy Goran Visnjic. She's actually been sent to kill him and his 13-year-old daughter Abby (Kirsten Prout) but finds herself befriending them instead. However, keeping them alive proves to be far more difficult than assassinating them due to the fact that it's the fearsome Order of The Hand that wants them dead. This organisation, responsible for the well known expression "talk to the Hand", employ a terrifying group of ninja assassins led by Kirigi (Will Yun Lee). His off-siders include the deadly Typhoid Mary (Natassia Malthe), a demon who can suck the life from you with a kiss or a touch, Stone (Bob Sapp), a giant of an individual with the toughness of a tank, and Tattoo (Chris Ackerman), whose impressive array of tattoos can spring to life at his command.

Even Elektra has to admit these are a formidable bunch of opponents, forcing her to call on the help of her former mentor Stick (Terence Stamp). But why does The Hand want Abby and Mark dead?

In Elektra Jennifer Garner gets to show what a talented and versatile actress she is, having successfully mastered two facial expressions: pouty and even poutier.

This is sure to be a hit with the fans but despite superb special effects and a slick look I found Elektra pretty dull. There just wasn't enough guts to the story and personally if I never see another ninja in my whole life I'll be happy. Sorry, I'm just not into ninjas.

Recommended for teenagers with low expectations or comic book geeks.
