Jan began painting at a very young age and attributes her love of the arts to her mother, who encouraged Jan and her sisters to paint and enjoy crafts. Jan began entering artworks in the North Coast National Show as a young child, and at age 12 won two first prizes for her paintings. Despite being encouraged to explore her creativity, it wasn't until much later in life that Jan began to paint in earnest. "In those days we were led to believe that being an artist was not real work, only a hobby," said Jan. "So life went on with only dabbling in art from time to time. But now that 'retirement' has arrived, this allows more time to follow my passion, which could be described as my life's purpose." This latest exhibition of Jan's work includes a series of charcoal and pastel drawings, paintings and mixed media works. The exhibition features a wide variety of themes and styles, and is reflective of how Jan continues to challenge herself. "Trying to capture the dazzling colours of nature and light is a challenge for any artist and spurs us on," Jan said. "Also portraits are intriguing by way of trying to capture the soul of the person through their eyes." Jan's ultimate dream is to one day paint at Mont Marte in Paris. Coffee & More is on show until the end of January. |
