Blade Trinity (MA)

Directed by David S Goyer

Blade Trinity (MA) with Wesley Snipes and Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds (left), Wesley Snipes (center) and Jessica Biel (right) go vampire hunting again in Blade: Trinity.

Filmgoers who have been following the Blade series, based on the Marvel comic characters, know these movies have little in common with the traditional Dracula legend. Don't expect wooden stakes, bats or some dude wearing a cape. Instead you can look forward to plenty of full-on action as Blade (Wesley Snipes) goes on a mega-vampire killing spree using every high-tech anti-vampire gadget conceivable.

Not that everything goes his way, mind you. In this third instalment, Blade Trinity, the bloodsuckers, led by Danica Talos (Parker Posey) and her undead followers Asher (Callum Keith Rennie) and Grimwood (Paul Levesque) have devised a cunning plan that will have Blade fall into the hands of the FBI. And of course no-one in the Bureau believes his story about vampires over-running the city like vermin. They just think he's a psychopathic killer.

Luckily for Blade, he's not the only fearless vampire slayer in existence: a gang calling themselves the Nightstalkers led by Abigail (Jessica Biel), the daughter of Blade's best friend and mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) have taken it upon themselves to rid the planet of bloodsuckers. And they just may have the weapon capable of doing it!

Lets hope so, because Danica and her orthodontically-challenged buddies have been very busy resurrecting the one and only original Count Dracula (Dominic Purcell) from his grave in the desert in Iraq. With his help they plan on turning earth into the Planet of the Vampires.

Blade Trinity is an enjoyable action-horror thriller. Despite being the third bite of the cherry (if not the neck), the story still manages to come up with a lot of original ideas and plenty of thrills and chills. The action is non-stop, the special effects extremely creepy and thanks to the addition of Ryan Reynolds as a Nightstalker member Hannibal King, there are quite a lot of laughs. Blade is as verbally challenged as usual but at least he looks good, if you go for the strong, silent type. And being a superhero he has no problem keeping the sunnies on!

While I'm a sucker for the more atmospheric, traditional vampire tales, this 21st Century version still has plenty of bite.
