Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (M)
Directed by Beeban Kidron
Super shag Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) sends boyfriend Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) into a coma...
Here are a couple of questions to ponder: Did the world really need another Bridget Jones film? And is it just me or does Renee Zellweger look remarkably similar to a blow up doll? (Check out the poster if you want proof!)
I'm a huge fan of Helen Fielding's novels, they're an absolute scream and I thought the first film, Bridget Jones' Diary, was a successful adaption. Millions of women around the world, including this one, breathed a collective sigh of relief when American actress Renee Zellweger actually got it right. Gaining kilos and mastering the Pommie accent she metamorphosed into the neurotic chronicler of cigarettes, calories and boys.
And now she's back in the highly anticipated, (but internationally panned) sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
I wasn't expecting great things from this romantic comedy. Let's face it, other reviews have been less than flattering, but I was still entertained. Yep, I parked by brain at the door, switched to total girlie mode and sat back to enjoy Bridget make a total fool of herself once again.
Ok, so the world's ditziest blonde has landed herself a gorgeous guy at last - in human rights lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Six weeks and 71 super shags later everything's hunky dory. Or is it? Just who does the stunningly beautiful Rebecca (Jacinda Barrett) think she is and what's she doing hanging around Bridget's boyfriend?
And the man who put the S into Sexy Sleazebag is back as well. Leave it to Cleaver (Hugh Grant) to make trouble between Bridget and Mark...
This sequel is no equal to the original but it's not so terrible either. (On this point the boyfriend begs to differ.)
I still had fun. I did have a problem with the concept that Bridget is this amazing man-magnet. And not just men, now she even has the babes chasing her. And if you think I'm being horrible wait until you see the film. I know Renee had to bulk up for the role but did she have to bulk up quite so much? Most of the time she just looks frumpy. And I know Bridget's supposed to be a ditz, but is she supposed to be brain dead? The zombies in Dawn of the Dead had higher IQs!
All I can say is she must be a super shag.
