Hidden treasures

One of the biggest art exhibitions on the local arts calendar, the Lismore Regional Treasure Art Prize, is now on show at the Lismore Regional Gallery.

The exhibition is a tribute to people who have made a special contribution to the Northern Rivers community, or places that hold a special meaning for locals such as rainforest remnants or nature reserves.

This year entries pay homage to many inspirational local identities, from community works and doctors to musicians, artists, environmentalists, poets and comedians.

For example, Lismore artist Peter Gibson has entered a humorous piece titled The Wok, which features an ordinary kitchen wok painted with Lismore's geographical landscape.

"The wok is a celebration of the unique geographical attributes of Lismore, its encompassing hills and position within the Rainbow Region," Peter said. "Lismore, affectionately known as 'The Wok' for it's wok-like characteristics, is also a hot spot for progressive thought, innovation and proactive initiatives towards global sustainability."

This year's judge is noted Australian curator Frank McBride, who is currently curator of visual art at the Museum of Brisbane, and has many years experience working within the Australian arts industry.

He will announce the first prize of $5,000, sponsored by Norco, at the exhibition opening tonight, November 4, from 5.30pm.

The Lismore Regional Treasure Art Prize runs until December 11.

The Youth Photographic Awards are an opportunity for budding photographers to get involved in the regional treasure excitement. Young people can enter in two categories: five to 12 years of age and 13 to 19 years of age. Prizes to the value of $1,000, sponsored by the Northern Rivers Echo, will be awarded to the photographers who best portray a local treasure. The competition will be judged by respected Lismore photographer Des Sheridan.

The winners of the Youth Photographic Awards will be announced at a special opening at the gallery this Saturday, November 6, by Echo director Heather Williams and Mr Sheridan from 11am.
