Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Directed by Adam McKay
Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) is the newest addition to the Channel 4 news team, much to the consternation of lead anchor, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell, far right) and his fellow anchor-men.
The jury's still out on whether I'm a fan of comedian/actor Will Ferrell but he's almost won me over with this goofy comedy set in my favourite decade, the '70s.
A lot of things were big back then - hair, ties, collars, moustaches, cars and San Diego's number one anchorman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell).
He and the rest of the KVWN news team; on-the-spot reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sports caster Champ Kind (David Koechner) and dopey weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Corell), have taken their station to the top of the ratings and life's pretty damn good.
In their chauvinistic, macho, politically incorrect world men alone rule the airwaves and the idea of a woman co-anchoring the news is unimaginable. That is until the arrival of foxy journalist Veronica Corning-Stone (Christina Applegate). She's a blonde bombshell with brains and attitude. She's also very ambitious and when Ron is a no-show for the first time in his career after a tragedy involving his talking dog Baxter (don't ask!) Veronica's more than ready to fill his seat, wowing the viewers and her boss alike.
Soon Ron's gone and Veronica's on... permanently. Is this the end for the legendary Ron Burgundy? Tune in to find out.
You don't need me to remind you that humour is subjective. What makes one person laugh hysterically will leave another bemused and unimpressed. I was looking forward to this comedy thanks to its preview trailer. While I'll be the first to admit the whole film is insane, (ok, lets be totally honest... stupid!) I did enjoy myself and laughed a lot.
There's nothing subtle about Anchorman - I don't think the word exists in co-writers Ferrell and fellow Saturday Night Live buddy Adam McKay's (who also directs) vocabulary. People got their arms chopped off and just keep right on talking. But hey, it worked for Monty Python!
Many of Ferrell's Hollywood mates make cameo appearances and it's fun to play spot the stars! Watch out for Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn.
If you like your comedies on the screwball side with more arse than class then Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy will have you wetting your pants.
