Drawing on their scientific backgrounds, Loraine and Amanda have brought together art and science like never before, providing a kaleidoscope of colour and ideas that will interest any inquiring mind.
Loraine is a molecular geneticist and painter, currently working at the Australian Museum in Sydney. She has applied her analytical background and attention to detail to the creation of a major series of abstract pieces, inspired by music. The works are intended to convey the enveloping nature of sound and transmit an aura of contemplation. Also included is a series of prints and linocuts, inspired by Loraine's doctoral research on germinating barley.
Amanda, a marine scientist and artist, has taken inspiration directly from her research and produced a series of paintings and sculptural works. Many pieces depict 'dangerous creatures' - those that both fascinate and repel us with their intricately detailed patterns, spontaneity and deadly poisons. Amanda attempts to capture the essence of a world that we can only visit, yet is filled with such beauty and diverse character that the desire for more is often insatiable. Balancing Passions is on show at the Roxy Gallery until November 17. The exhibition will be opened this Saturday, October 23, at the gallery (143 Summerland Way, Kyogle) from 6pm. All are welcome and entry is by donation. |
