"I refuse to sell my paintings cheaply to white galleries who make all the profit," Gordon said. Called Black Fella's Dreaming, Gordon's gallery always ensures artists receive 70% from the sale of their paintings, and all artworks are bought directly from the artist.
The collection itself is nothing short of extraordinary, with countless photographs, paintings, documents and traditional artefacts that represent 30 years of art and memorabilia from communities around Australia. Of particular interest is a large body of brave urban Aboriginal art that is both cheeky and satirical, with observations on Australian politics, sexuality and modern life.
Artists include Gordon Syron, Karla Dickens, Gordon Hookey, Bronwyn Bancroft, James Simon, Clifford Possum and Lily Karadada, as well as many others from the central desert, Western Australia and Arnhem Land. Other contributors include Elaine Pelot with a stunning photographic selection and Sione Falemaka from the South Sea Islands with hand made weavings. Entry to the gallery is by donation and Gordon asks people to simply 'give what you can afford'. Black Fella's Dreaming is at 12 Station Street, Bangalow. It is open seven days from 10am to 4pm. |
