I take this opportunity to congratulate those candidates who were successful in election as Richmond Valley councillors for the next four and a half years. I also thank all the other candidates who, though unsuccessful in the March 27 poll, were prepared to offer their services for the betterment and interests of our community.

Your new Council has a mix of broad experience and abilities that will be utilised to provide effective leadership, efficient service and sound decision making in the best interests of us all.

Richmond Valley faces many challenges, as you would have been made aware during the recent campaign. Those challenges are best dealt with by positive action rather than with negativity.

Council policy is to consult with the community on major issues. The recent survey of residents and ratepayers is an important part of the consultation process.

Currently the survey results are being processed and collated for presentation and study. We are heartened by the response - a thousand forms were returned.

The first two meetings of the new Council will take place on Tuesday, April 20. Council will elect its deputy Mayor and appoint committees in the morning, followed by the ordinary meeting at 2pm.

Contrary to some misconception, the Council is not officially sworn in, nor does the Mayor wear a robe or chain.

An interesting promotion planned by the Casino Art Centre is a display of Higher School Certificate art works completed by district students over the last ten years. This is an opportunity for families, obviously proud of their children's performance whilst at school, to take along those art pieces from yesteryear for the whole community to enjoy.

The Casino Art Centre is ideally situated in Walker Street for you to drop in and browse at any time.

The HSC works will be on display during May and June. Phone Peter Gallo on 66627325 for details.
