Honey (PG)
Directed by Billie Woodruff
What a feeling! Jessica Alba (centre) as Honey Daniels shares her choreographic talents with a group of neighbourhood kids.
If (like a certain somebody in my life) you drooled your way through the TV series Dark Angel and have the big time hots for its luscious star, Jessica Alba, then I recommend you check her out in Honey, her feature film debut.
Sure it's no Oscar contender but if your idea of a good time is watching the gorgeous Jessica get all hot and sweaty as she gyrates to the latest hip hop tunes then you'll be in seventh heaven.
I admit I'm more of a 70s girl myself, but even I could appreciate that Alba has the moves down pat. She trained hard for the role of Honey Daniels, a dancer whose dreams of performing in music videos is realised when she's noticed on the dance floor by video director Michael Ellis (David Moscow).
Soon she's choreographing videos for the likes of Missy Elliot, Ginuwine and Tweet (huh?), but it soon dawns on her that her true heart lies with the street kids she teaches at the local community centre. Suddenly her new ambition is to open her own dance studio where kids like Benny (Lil' Romeo) and his little brother Raymond (Zachary Isaiah Williams) can escape from a life of abuse and crime.
Unfortunately when she rejects Michael's advances she finds herself out of work and unable to finance her project. What's a girl to do? Is Honey the 21st centuries Flashdance? I doubt it. It's all a little too clichéd for my taste and Honey is so sweet I felt myself slipping into a diabetic coma.
Thankfully the energy of the dace numbers and the dynamic young cast under the debt direction of music video director Billie Woodruff mange to make Honey an enjoyable, if lightweight, viewing experience.
