Good oil on olives
Don Leo shows off one of the trees in the 1300 olive grove at Mongogarie Lodge in readiness for the upcoming Olive Fest.
Fancy spending time in an olive grove, eating delicious food, trying fresh produce and hearing great music? Then get along to the Summerland Olive Association's fourth annual Olive Fest at Mongogarie Lodge south of Casino next Sunday, February 15.
Association member Don Leo, son of Mongogarie Lodge owners Angelo and Maria Leo, said that the festival coincides with the annual olive harvest.
"And apart from the food and music, activities on the day include, olive grove tours, olive processing equipment inspection, local produce tasting and sales, an olive pit spitting competition, and plenty of kids activities," Don said.
"The festival gives people a chance to be more aware that the olive industry is developing on the North Coast. And it's an excuse for a bit of a party!"
Follow the Summerland Way for 10km south of Casino, turn right at the sign to Mongogarie Lodge and follow Mongogarie Road for 13km.

Tyres dumped in national park
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is investigating the illegal dumping of used truck tyres at Salty Lagoon carpark within Broadwater National Park near Evans Head on the weekend.
NPWS Area Manager David Murray said an investigation was now underway to trace the origin of the tyres.
"The dumping of tyres not only causes damage to the facilities used by the many visitors who come to enjoy the park, but also require time and money to remove that would be better spent on conservation programs," Mr Murray said.
Anyone with information should contact the NPWS on 6627 0200.
