Council Comment
with Merv King
It seems not that long ago that Lismore seemed to have perceived problem with its 'get up and go'.
But take a look at the city today and you will notice a real zest in the streets.
After many years of deliberation, work will begin shortly on a new aquatic centre on the existing historic Memorial Baths site. It will be a place for all the family.
The levee construction continues to progress smoothly, with the section adjacent to Spinks Park due for completion by March. When finished in December, Lismore will gain 1-in-10 year flooding protection.
Many residents will have already noticed that a new park has been created near the Ballina St Bridge. It has already been used for the Herb festival and other city events.
Work will continue on revitalising the entire length of the Wilsons River to really make it an asset for the city.
The facelift for Molesworth St has progressed well, with the new trees and gardens beginning to come into their own.
Planning is also well advanced for revitalising Lismore's unique laneways, by turning them into a vibrant part of the city's retail and community life.
Our most visited public asset - the new library - has been welcomed by existing and new borrowers - and there are a lot of them. Since opening, borrowers have increased by more than 20%.
Meanwhile, planning continues on a new cultural precinct on the old high school site - the new home for art and culture right in the centre of the city.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Southern Cross University in Lismore. The SCU has made an enormous positive contribution to life of our city, and this 10th anniversary year will be marked with several commemorative events.
Elections 2004
It has been a privilege for me to be Mayor of Lismore for the last 18 months since the death of the former Mayor Cr Bob Gates.
This year is an election year for local councils, and many people are asking if I will be standing for Mayor.
Readers would know that I never intended to be Mayor when I stood for election in 1999.
I have been very grateful for the support I have received from Councillors and residents.
I will be making my decision on whether to stand for Mayor or not in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, I am happy to meet with residents at Council's CBD Centre in Magellan St on Tuesday mornings.
Appointments can be made by phoning Sue Wade on 6625 0500
