Something's Gotta Give (M)
Directed by Nancy Meyers.
Back to the Cookoo's Nest? Not surprising with Keanu as your doctor! Dianne Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Amada Peet star in Something's Gotta Give.
Jack Nicholson playing a rich playboy who only dates women in their early 20s.. Gee, what a stretch!
Ok, so it may not be the most challenging role of his career, but who cares! It's Jack and I'm a huge fan. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of his latest movie, Something's Gotta Give. Not that it's a stinker, I just didn't think it was all that great, which is a shame as it has a dynamite cast.
There's Jack, of course, who plays 63-year-old bachelor Harry Sanborn. Every woman he dates is stunningly beautiful and young enough to be his granddaughter, which is just the way he likes it. The latest babe to fall under his spell is Marin (Amanda Peet). She's been holding out, but this weekend the two of them are off to the Hamptons where Marin's mum (Diane Keaton) has a beach house. They plan to get down and dirty and Harry's dosed up on Viagra in anticipation.
What neither of them anticipate is the arrival of mum and her sister Zoe (Frances McDormand). What nobody anticipates is Harry having a heart attack and ending up in hospital where it's soon obvious spunky young doctor, Julian (Keanu Reeves) has the hots big time for "mom", aka famous playwright Erica Barry.
Turns out Marin's no Florence Nightingale. She can't wait to get back to the city, leaving her elderly boyfriend in the tender care of Erica, much to Erica's annoyance.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to guess what happens. Suddenly Erica, who hasn't had a man in her life for years, is being pursued by two very eligible gentlemen. (Not much of a choice, if you ask me - sexy handsome young doctor or ageing lothario who needs Viagra to get it up.. admittedly he's a multi-millionaire, but still..)
I've always said that comedy is very much a matter of personal taste. Many will love this movie, while others, like me, will be disappointed. It's beautifully filmed, well acted and Jack is great.. (He doesn't raise his eyebrows once and you get to see his gum, although I'm not sure if that is a good thing).
There are also plenty of amusing moments, but as far as romantic comedies go, this isn't one of the best.
